Three Fencers Named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area At-Large Team

4.21.20 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - Quinn Duwelius, Malia Hee, and Kerry Plunkett have been named to the 2019-20 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area At-Large Team following an outstanding campaign on the strip and in the classroom this year. The seniors are three of twelve female student-athletes to earn this honor. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of 30 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Duwelius was the team captain as a fifth-year senior, fighting back from a recurring injury that kept her from competing for most of last year. She went 39-35 in her final season in cherry and white to finish her career at 116-70 in dual play. The Gales Ferry, Conn. native represented the Owls at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional in February, earning a career-high 10th place finish. Duwelius entered the spring semester with a 3.96 cumulative GPA as a psychology major.

Hee was the sabre squad captain, and the sabre wins leader for the season with 62. Her career total of 235 tied with Plunkett to set the record in all-time sabre wins. The Vancouver, Wash. native had a team-best second-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, earning a spot at the NCAA Championships which were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hee entered the spring semester with a 3.96 cumulative GPA as an advertising major.

Plunkett saw 60 sabre wins in dual play this season to end her time on Broad Street with a career record of 235-90. Her fifth-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional qualified her for the NCAA Championships. The West Linn, Ore. native was selected for the NCAA Championships for the fourth-straight year, one of only a handful of Owls to do so. Plunkett entered the spring semester with a 3.7 cumulative GPA as a kinesiology major.

All three fencers had a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester. The trio is joined on the All-Academic Team by fellow Owl Jaylene Everett of the gymnastics team.
