Women’s Soccer Defeats LIU, 2-1
10.12.21 | Women's Soccer
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Temple women's soccer (4-5-3, 1-3-0 AAC) triumphed over LIU (2-7-2, 2-3-1 NEC), 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon in a back-and-forth battle at the LIU Soccer Park. A late second half push by the Owls proved to be just enough to propel the Cherry and White to victory.
How It Happened
"For us, today's game wasn't just about the win," Nick Bochette said. "It was about seeing progress and seeing what will lead to more success come Sunday and in the rest of our conference games. I thought it was a deserving win, but we certainty have work to do before the weekend rolls around."

How It Happened
- The Owls entered the match controlling possession of the ball, outshooting the Sharks 5-2 in the first half while earning three corner kick opportunities to the Sharks one. Emily Kavanaugh, Phoebe Hollin and Erin Theiller all found opportunities, but none found the back of the net, keeping the match a draw into the half.
- LIU wasted no time as they entered the second half, firing off four unanswered shots by the 52nd minute. Despite allowing four attempts, the Temple backline, spearheaded by Theiller, only allowed one shot on goal for Kyla Burns to step in for the save.
- With less than 20 minutes left to play, the Owls found the spark they were looking for. Standout playmaker, Hailey Gutowski used her speed to come from behind and win possession of the ball inside the box. Gutowski took one step before rocketing a shot to the opposite corner for the 74th minute go-ahead goal.
- The Cherry and White built off their momentum, scoring again just eight minutes later. Kavanaugh shifted around her defender to make a run down the left wing. Freshman Sumaya Togba came streaking down the middle as Kavanaugh sent a cross inside. Togba made contact, putting the ball past the hands of LIU goalkeeper Kayla DeTreux for the 2-0 cushion.
- The Sharks did not give up, finding a goal of their own with just four minutes to play. Sami Jablonski found an opening, sneaking a grounder past Burns to earn a spot on the scoreboard.
- The Sharks earned a corner with less than two minutes to play, hoping to find the equalizer but the Cherry and White stood firm, clearing the ball out of their defensive zone to hold on to the win.
- Togba's 82nd minute game-winner marks her first goal of the season and first career goal as an Owl.
- Kavanaugh dished out her first assist of the year, advancing to fifteen points on the season with seven goals and one assist.
- The Owls held the Sharks to only eight total shots, the least amount of shots allowed since Oct. 27, 2019, when they held Delaware State to just six.
