Women's Soccer Falls to No. 16 SMU, 2-0

10.20.21 | Women's Soccer

DALLAS – Temple women's soccer (5-6-2, 2-4-0 AAC) dropped to No. 16 SMU (9-2-2, 3-1-2 AAC), 2-0 in a hard-fought battle at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Wednesday night. The Mustangs came out strong, holding consistent offensive possession to earn quality opportunities on goal for the win over the Owls.

How it Happened
  • SMU entered the match aggressive towards goal, firing off four shots on target within the first 15 minutes of play. Standout goalkeeper Kamryn Stablein showed her consistency yet again, nabbing all four saves in an attempt to break the Mustang momentum.
  • SMU was relentless in their pursuit, maintaining offensive possession to earn four corner kick opportunities. Despite the Mustangs efforts, Erin Theiller, Roisin McGovern, Marissa DiGenova and Jessica Wallace led the defense to successfully defend all four opportunities and eliminate the scoring threat.
  • The Mustangs finally broke through in the 31st minute. Sammy Nieves made a run down the right side, sending a short cross to the foot of Alina Khan. Khan made contact, redirecting the ball to the opposite corner of the net for the go-ahead goal.
  • With halftime approaching, the Owls looked for the equalizer. Kyla Tucker made a promising run down the right wing for the Cherry and White, sending a line drive towards the opposite corner of the goal. Mustang goalkeeper Sammy Estrada came out to make the play, cutting off Tucker's angle to make the diving save.
  • With only five seconds left on the clock before half, Lexy Endres created a fast break opportunity as she sent a ball over the SMU backline. Teri Jackson made the run, but Estrada stepped up for the save yet again to hold on to the Mustang advantage into halftime.
  • A solid defensive effort kept SMU scoreless well into the second half, but SMU struck again in the 72nd minute off a give-and-go from Lindsey Whitmore to Briggita Pulins.
  • The Owls pushed hard for the remainder of play in an attempt to cut the lead, but SMU stood firm to cling to the 2-0 victory.
 From the Coach
"Full credit to SMU tonight," Nick Bochette said. "This wasn't the result that we wanted but all we can do is understand that we have everything to play for in these next two games. It takes every ounce of physical ability, emotional ability, and mental ability to compete at this level and that's what we need to bring to the table in the remainder of the season."

Up Next
The Owls will travel to Orlando, Fl. on Sunday, Oct. 24 to face UCF in their last road game of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
