PHILADELPHIA - After two preseason tournaments earlier this fall, the Temple fencing team will open team competition at the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 5.Â
The Owls have had solid performances in both individual meets, with Zoe Turner leading the team each time. The saberist has seen two podium finishes this season, finishing second at the Temple Open and tying for third at the Penn State Open. Two other fencers have seen top-8 finishes, with freshman Cindy Long (epee) finishing eighth at the Temple Open and Naomi Ross earning a fifth-place finish at the Penn State Open.
The freshmen have had impressive starts to their collegiate careers, with foilist Anna Novoseltseva earning a 13th place finish and saberist Eva Ventura finishing 12th to round out the top-15 finishers at the Temple Open. Graduate transfer Brooke Stanicki (foil) narrowly missed a top-15 finish at the Penn State Open, finishing 16th, while freshman Arwen Gormley (sabre) tied for 18th.Â
Several Owls saw improvements in their finishes at the Penn State Open, with epeeists Ashley Cherry finishing 13 spots higher (22nd) and Margherita Calderaro finishing 15 spots higher (21st) than their Temple Open finishes. Foilists Gretl Merges and Anastasia Yankovskiy also saw improvement, with Merges finishing 16 spots higher (30th) and Yankovskiy finishing eight spots higher (22nd) at the Penn State Open.Â
Temple will face four teams in Fairfield, Conn., with the Owls set to fence Harvard, NYU, Vassar, and host Sacred Heart.Â
