Gymnastics Hits Season High Against #24 UNC

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple gymnastics team nearly pulled off an upset over nationally-ranked UNC, but fell just short, despite hitting a season-best score of 195.100. The #24 Tar Heels got the narrow win, coming just .150 ahead of the Owls, with a 195.250. 

How it Happened
> Temple opened the meet with a lead, after a season-best score on vault.
> However, the Owls had to count a fall on bars, trailing UNC at the midway point.
> The Owls had a solid beam rotation, narrowing the gap heading into the final event.
> Temple shined on floor, matching a program record with a 49.300 effort, but UNC just pulled it out, as their 11th-ranked beam lineup finished with a 49.150 to seal the win.

Meet Notes
> Temple's team score of 195.100 was the fifth highest score in program history.
> Junior Ariana Castrence won three titles, taking vault, floor, and the All-Around, in her first time competing all four events this year.
> Six other Owls recorded podium finishes at the meet led by freshmen Cyrena Whalen (bars) and Brooke Donabedian (floor) who each tallied second place finishes.
> Juniors Caitlin Gray (vault) and Julianna Roland (floor) and seniors Tori Edwards (bars) and Faith Leary (floor) all had third place efforts.

Vault
> Temple led off the meet with a season-high vault rotation of 48.950. 
> Castrence led the way with a 9.875, matching her career high.
> Gray tied for third on the event with a career-best 9.825.
> Other high scores on the event were Leary (9.775), vaulting for the first time this season, as well as Edwards (9.750).

Bars
> Temple's bars' woes continues, as the Owls counted a fall, to finish at 48.100.
> Whalen's 9.775 was a season-best for the rookie, while Edwards notched a 9.750.

Beam
> Temple made up some ground with a solid beam rotation, going 48.750.
> Donabedian's 9.825 led the way for Temple, while Roland was also strong with a 9.800.
> Senior Jordyn Oster led off the event with a 9.725.

Floor
> Temple's floor lineup again dazzled, as the team put together a program-record tying 49.300.
> Edwards and freshman Renee Schugman each had 9.825's in the first two spots, and no Owl went lower.
> Donabedian recorded a 9.875 for her season-best score in the third spot.
> Making her first appearance in the lineup this season, Castrence made it count, going 9.900 to tie her career high score. One judge went 9.95 for the junior on the event.
> Rounding out the fantastic lineup, Roland and Leary both put up scores of 9.850.

> Temple is back on the floor on the road next weekend, taking on NC State and William and Mary on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.
