Davis Named Top 10 Candidate for Cheryl Miller Award
2.3.21 | Women's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Mia Davis has been named a Top 10 candidate for the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Wednesday afternoon. The forward was also named a Top 10 candidate for this prestigious award during the 2019-20 season.Â
The annual award in its fourth year recognizes the top small forwards in Women's NCAA Division I college basketball and is named in honor of three-time Naismith Player of the Year, Cheryl Miller.Â
Davis leads Temple with 18.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. The Baltimore, Md. native also leads the Owls in both three-point percentage and free throw percentage with 37.5 and 73.7, respectively. Davis totals four double-doubles on the season thus far, including a monstrous game at FGCU on Dec. 6 where she logged a career-high 34 points and 12 rebounds.Â
"When I found out Mia was a Top 10 contender for the Cheryl Miller Award for the second year in a row I was ecstatic," commented head women's basketball coach Tonya Cardoza. "When you look at the other players on the list, they're All-Americans that were recruited by these Power Five schools, so for her to be in the conversation is a big deal. She wasn't a widely recruited player and people didn't know about her, so to see her make her mark both here at Temple and in women's college basketball, it's been a great thing to watch over these past four years."Â
Â
In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Cheryl Miller Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
Â
The winner of the 2021 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented April 9, 2021, along with the four other members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award, in addition to the Men's Starting Five. College basketball fans can support their favorite players by participating in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies.
Previous winners of the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award include Satou Sabally, Oregon (2020), Bridget Carleton, Iowa State (2019) and Gabby Williams, Connecticut (2018).Â
