Gymnastics Takes on Arizona to Open NCAA Championships

PHILADELPHIA --Â The Temple gymnastics team is set to start competition at the 2021 NCAA Championships, beginning with a head-to-head match-up against Arizona out of the Pac-12. The Owls and Wildcats will compete on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. ET, with the winner advancing to the regional semifinals.
HISTORY MAKERS
Temple has made history this season, earning a bid to the 2021 NCAA Championships for the first time in 29 years. It's also the first appearance for the Owls in the NCAA meet since bids were decided by national rank.
EAGL CHAMPS
The Owls had a furious sprint finish to the regular season, recording its four best team scores of the season in its final four meets. Temple entered the EAGL Championships seeded fourth, but took the team title with a program record 196.500. The Cherry & White's stellar EAGL performance vaulted the team from #39 in the national rankings to #30, securing a bid to the NCAA Championships.
VAULT
Temple ranks 32nd in the nation on vault with an NQS of 49.019. The Owls hit their season best score of 49.075 in back-to-back meets, closing out the regular season at Towson. The Owls have gone 48.900 or better in six of the team's 12 meets this season. Junior Julianna Roland finished the regular season with a 9.863 NQS and twice this season tied Temple's program record with a 9.900. Junior Madison Brooks has come on strong late in the season with an NQS of 9.819, while freshman Renee Schugman (9.794 NQS) also brings consistency to the lineup.
BARS
Though bars was Temple's lowest scoring event of the season, the team ranks 41st in the nation with an NQS of 48.894. The Owls hit their season high of 49.025 just the last weekend of the regular season, which tied for the fifth best score in program history. Senior Tori Edwards carries a 9.788 NQS and has a season-high of 9.850, while junior Nichole Smith has an NQS of 9.763.
BEAM
Temple has a 49.144 beam NQS this season, ranking 29th nationally. The Owls season high on the event is 49.225 which they hit at the EAGL Championships tying the program record. Roland leads the beam squad with a 9.856 NQS, while freshman Brooke Donabedian is right behind her with a 9.850. Five Owls have gone 9.850 or better on beam this season, with junior Ariana Castrence and senior Delaney Garin each tallying 9.900's this year. Senior Jordyn Oster has been a rock solid lead-off for the Owls this season with an NQS of 9.750.
FLOOR
The Cherry & White boast the 22nd best floor squad in the nation, with an NQS of 49.300. Temple has gone 49+ on floor in eight of 12 meets in 2021, including seven-straight to close the regular season. The Owls broke the program record last time out on the floor with a 49.375 at the EAGL Championships.
Senior Faith Leary anchors the impressive floor lineup with a 9.888 NQS, while Roland is second with a 9.881 NQS. Castrence was third on the team with an NQS of 9.875. All three of Temple's top floor workers have gone 9.900 on the event this season. Donabedian and Edwards each have RQS's of 9.856, while Shugman has a 9.838, and Oster a 9.806. All four have season highs of 9.875.
