Cayet, Eijgendaal, and Gawronski Claim AAC Weekly Awards
3.8.21 | Men's Soccer
IRVING, Texas- After a history-making 2-0 win over No. 2 SMU Saturday night, forward Mike Eijgendaal, defender, Pierre Cayet, and goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski have been honored by the American Athletic Conference. Eijgendaal has earned AAC Offensive Player of the Week, Cayet took AAC Defender of the Week, and Gawronski has been named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week for their efforts in the victory.
Eijgendaal claims the Midfielder of the Week award for his first time being honored by the conference. The sophomore transfer scored the opening goal of the match off a headed ball from Santiago Majewski. Eijgendaal settled the ball down and fired into the back of the net for the score. The goal was the first that SMU had allowed this season. The Netherlander has emerged as an offensive weapon as the season rolls on, with this marking his third straight game earning a point.Â
Cayet helped lead the Owls to one of their best defensive performances in years. The senior captain led the Temple defense to a shutout over a team that previously had scored nearly five goals a match. SMU got very few decent chances, and, despite getting six shots on net, rarely threatened to score. The Frenchman also became the first Owl defender to score all season, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity to put the team up two.Â
Gawronski was outstanding in his first collegiate start. The freshman played a key role in stopping the potent Mustang offense. The freshman made six saves, including stopping a couple of darts that looked like they had a chance. Gawronski is the first keeper to earn a clean sheet against SMU since UCF on September 28, 2018. Â
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 13 against Tulsa to begin a three-game road trip. The Golden Hurricane is the only AAC opponent Temple has yet to face. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff and will be streamed on ESPN+.
