Golf Places Seventh After Day One of AAC Championship

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – Junior Conor McGrath kept up his solid play, shooting an even-par 72 over the first round of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championship to lead Temple and tie for 14th overall. As a team, the Owls shot an eight-over 296 and are in seventh place in the three-day, 54-hole tournament which is being held at the Southern Hills Plantation Club. 

Recapping the Day
> McGrath, who leads the Owls with a 73.3 stroke average, was one-under on the front none with birdies on the par-5 fifth hole and par-4 ninth, but a bogey on the par-3 17th pushed him to one over on back nine.  He did have a birdie on the 14th to give him three on the day.
> Senior Dawson Anders, who led Temple with four birdies, shot a one-over 73 to tie for 19th.  The Owls captain was one under after consecutive birdies on 12 and 13, but bogeyed 15 and 17 to close the round.
> Sophomore Graham Chase opened with a birdie on the par-4 first hole and was the only Owl to close with a birdie on the final three holes (17th).  In between, he managed only one more birdie while recording three bogeys and one double-bogey to finish two-over and tied for 27th.
> Junior Buddy Hansen was one-over through 15, but played plus-four over the final three holes to finish with a five over 77 to place 37th.
> Sophomore Andrew Curran rounded out the Owls five with a six-over 78.

The Field
> USF, ranked 35th in the latest rankings, shot a blistering 18-under 270 to lead Memphis (285) by 14 strokes.
>#20 SMU, the top-seed, is two strokes behind Memphis and tied for third place with East Carolina (287). Right behind is UCF (288) and Cincinnati (289).  Wichita State (297) is one shot behind Temple and in eighth place.
> USF's Kyle Flexsenhar and Luke Gifford along with Wichita State's Marcus Wochner lead the 40-player field with six-under 66s.
