Crew Ready For Bergen Cup
4.28.21 | Men's Crew
PHILADELPHIA – After a clean sweep against Holy Cross on Overpeck Lake for the heavyweights, and competitive races against Bucknell and Mercyhurst for the lightweights, both squads return to the Schuylkill River this Saturday for the Bergen Cup.
Last week, the Owls' Varsity Eight, ranked 9th in the recent IRCA poll, pulled off the victory against then #16 Holy Cross by a margin of 16 seconds. The second varsity eight boat followed it up shortly after with a six second victory of its own, and in the last race of the day the third varsity eight and freshman eight came in first and second, respectively. Meanwhile, the lightweights had a busy weekend of their own, racing in back-to-back days.
The last time out at the Bergen Cup, high winds cut the racing short in 2019, but not before the Owls' third varsity eight managed to win the only event of the day,
"The Bergen Cup is always hard fought, and we can expect that even more so this year," head coach Brian Perkins said. "This is Penn's last race of the year so their Heavies & Lights will definitely come out swinging. The rest of the field will be looking to set up their Dad Vail run, so there is a lot more on the table than unifying the three City Cups. This will be some tough racing."
The racing starts at 10:30 a.m. as the fifth varsity eight boats kick things off. The Owls' third varsity eight and second lightweight eight will participate in this race.
From there, races are set to start in 15-minute increments with the fourth varsity eight up next, featuring the Temple varsity lightweight eight.
To wrap things up, the varsity eights boats hit the water at 11:45 a.m. as the Owls look to keep their undefeated season alive.
Live racing results will be tweeted from @Temple_MCrew as well as the @temple.crew Instagram story.
Spectators are not permitted at Saturday's event and Kelly Drive will be closed.
