Volleyball Releases 2021 Schedule
8.12.21 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIAÂ -- The Temple volleyball team has released its 2021 schedule. The Owls open the season at home on August 27, hosting the Temple Invitational. Temple's full schedule features four tournaments, 12 non-conference matches, and 20 American Athletic Conference clashes. The Owls will play 19 matches at home at McGonigle Hall and 13 matches on the road.
"I'm really happy we can play a full schedule," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "I think we have a really attractive mix of opponents in our non-conference schedule that combine some really high RPI matches and other teams that are at the top of their respective conferences. Once we hit conference play, the double round robin schedule is going to be really competitive. I think there's at least five teams that can contend for the title and all of the matches will be tough."
NON-CONFERENCE
> Temple will play in four tournaments during non-conference action, playing three at home and heading to one on the road.
> The Owls will host the Temple Invitational at McGonigle Hall on August 27 and 27, as Rider (MAAC), Delaware (CAA), and Stanford (Pac-12) come to town. The Cardinal highlight the tournament, having won the 2019 NCAA Championship. Rider made the NCAA Tournament in the spring, while Delaware finished the spring season in the top 39 in RPI.
> Next up for the Owls is the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge at McGonigle Hall September 3 and 4. Temple will see three teams from three different conferences in Maryland (Big Ten), Iona (MEAC), and LIU (NEC).
> Temple goes on the road to Towson's Tiger Invitational September 10 and 11, squaring off against Norfolk State (MEAC), Lehigh (Patriot), and the host Tigers, who have won back-to-back CAA Championships.
> The Owls close non-conference play by hosting the City Classic at McGonigle Hall on September 17 and 18. All three opponents are within an hours drive of Philadelphia, as Temple hosts cross-town rivals Villanova (Big East) and Penn (Ivy), as well as Princeton (Ivy).
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
> Temple finished as the American Athletic Conference runner up in 2020-21, advancing all the way to the championship game before falling in four to UCF.Â
> For the 2021 season, the conference is going back to a regular-season only format, with all 10 teams playing twice, once at home and once on the road. The regular season champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
> Temple will open AAC play on the road on September 24, playing at SMU, and then heading to Memphis on September 26. Other road AAC matches include East Carolina (Oct. 8), Cincinnati (Oct. 10), Houston (Oct. 24), Tulane (Oct. 31), Wichita State (Nov. 12), Tulsa (Nov. 14), UCF (Nov. 19), and USF (Nov. 21).Â
> Temple opens its home conference slate the first weekend of October, hosting Tulane (Oct. 1) and Houston (Oct. 3). The other home AAC clashes feature USF (Oct. 15), UCF (Oct. 17), Tulsa (Oct. 22), Wichita State (Oct. 24), Memphis (Nov. 5), SMU (Nov. 7), Cincinnati (Nov. 26), and East Carolina (Nov. 27).
