Gawronski Named Consensus American Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year; Men’s Soccer Voted Fifth in Preseason Poll
8.19.21 | Men's Soccer
IRVING, Texas- The Temple men's soccer team has been named fifth in the American Athletic Conference 2021 men's soccer preseason poll, as voted on by league coaches. Goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski headlines the individual awards, as the redshirt freshman has been named the AAC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year by unanimous vote. He is the first Owl to be awarded Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year since Dan Scheck in 2014.
Gawronski enters his third season with the Temple men's soccer program following an outstanding 2020-21 season. The keeper made his collegiate debut last season, coming in at halftime against USF to relieve the struggling starter. Gawronski did allow a goal for his first 245 minutes of game time, including shutting out the top-ranked offense in the nation in then-No. 2 SMU. He earned AAC Goalkeeper of the Week honors twice and was named to the Weekly Honor Roll for the week of March 15. He finished the season with Second-Team All-Confernence and All-Rookie honors.
Jalen Campbell looks to make an impact after garnering Second-Team All-Conference last season. The midfielder was an offensive powerhouse, tying for the team lead in goals (4) and points (10). He was also one of the most efficient players in the conference, scoring four goals on only seven shots. Campbell received national recognition after finding the back of the net twice in the season opener against USF. The junior was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com Team of the Week, as well as the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.
Forward Sean Karani also earned preseason honors as a member of the preseason All-Conference team. The sophomore will look to build off a season where he started every game leading the Temple attack. Karani scored twice and was able to create opportunities for his teammates using his game-breaking speed. He fired off five shots with three on goal against Memphis and passed for an assist the next week against USF. Karani was named Offensive Player of the Week for the week of April 3.
UCF was voted as the favorite to win the conference crown, earning three out of a possible six first-place votes following the Knights' late-season surge and subsequent NCAA tournament run last year. SMU finished second with 21 total points, just one short of UCF. The Mustangs also lead all teams with three Preseason All-Conference selections.
Tulsa took the third spot as the Golden Hurricane earned 19 points, including one vote for first place. USF earned 12 votes while the Owls slide in just behind them with 11 votes. Memphis finished last with five votes.
Temple will open its 2021 season on Aug. 26 at #10 Seton Hall.
