Men’s Soccer Falls in Overtime 2-1 to Villanova in First Loss of Season

9.12.21 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's soccer team (1-1-2, 0-0-0 AAC) defeated the Villanova Wildcats (3-0-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) 2-1 in double overtime. Alex Marin starred for the Owls, earning his first collegiate goal.

How it Happened
> Both sides had chances early, the Wildcats had the first shot of the match which rang off the post. Jalen Campbell and Nigel Griffith had the first two shots for the Owls, both missed their mark.
> Temple nearly scored in the 13th minute. Marques Antoine freed himself on the baseline and found a wide-open Marin for what would've been the first goal of the match. Marin however, was called offsides, keeping the score at nil.
> Only two minutes later, Marin would find the back of the net. The Owls earned a well-positioned free-kick roughly 40 yards from the mouth of the goal. Spencer Patton launched a perfect ball towards the box where he found Marin in mid-kick. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar and into the back of the net for the Ontario native's first career score and Patton's first assist as an Owl.
> The 32nd minute prompted one of the highlights of the match when goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski turned away what looked to be a surefire goal off a Wildcat corner. The keeper laid out with lightning-quick reflexes to block a header that seemed destined for the back of the net. Gawronski turned away another goal only seconds later to preserve the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
> Gawronski continued to impress, making two more saves to open the second half of play.
> In the 55th minute, Villanova scored to even things at one.
>  A tackle in the box in the 58th minute led to a red card being pulled on Temple. The Owls were forced to play a man down for the rest of the match.
> Neither side was able to muster a strong push for the remainder of regulation.
> The first overtime period saw neither team fire a shot.
> Villanova converted a penalty kick in the 106th minute to seal a 2-1 result.

 Game Notes
> Ten cards were issued in this match, a new season-high for a Temple match. Four were called on Temple, while six were called on Villanova.
> Dating back to last season, six of the last seven Temple matches ended in overtime.
> This was the first Philly Soccer Six match Temple has participated in nearly three years. They last played host to Penn on October 23, 2018.

From the Coach
> "The team played well. We got put in a position where we had to play from a tough position for a large portion of the game. The guys battled and competed really well, but ultimately we didn't make enough plays."  -- head coach Brian Rowland.
