Conor McGrath Sets School Records at GolfWeek Fall Challenge
9.14.21 | Men's Golf
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Conor McGrath's blistering start of the season continued in the final round of the GolfWeek Fall Challenge Tuesday.  The Temple standout, who earned all-Region honors last year, set two school records with a 13-under 203 to place second among the 93 golfers in the field.   The record score (203) surpassed the previous best 204 shared by Trey Wren (2018) and Billy Mullen (203) while his -13 was four strokes better than the previous record of -9 held by Wren (2018) and Brandon Matthews (2013).
As a team, Temple shot six-under for the day and an impressive 17-under for the tournament to place fourth in the 18-team field.
Recapping the Day
> McGrath, who had six birdies on the day, was four-under at the turn and improved to five under twice in the back nine before finishing with a bogey on 17 and par on 18 to finish with a four-under 68. He had 14 birdies for the tournament and played par 5 holes the best of any golfer with a 4.33 average for the tournament on those holes.
> Graham Chase was the other big story of the day for the Owls as the sophomore made his first collegiate hole-in-one on the 148-yard, par-three third hole. He added three birdies on the day and finished with a career-best two-under 70. His two-over 218 tied him for 42nd overall.
> Ethan Whitney, who added four more birdies in posting a team-best 15 for the tournament, shot a one-over 73 for his round. The true freshman finished with a three-under 213 to tie for 21st overall.
> Dawson Anders, who shot a two-over 74 for his final round, finished third overall for Temple and tied for 38th with a one-over 217.
> Joey Morganti had the third best round for the Owls, shooting a one-under 71. He had three birdies on the day and finished tied for 59th with a seven-over 223.
The Field
> Delaware (834), which shot -18 Tuesday, came from 17 strokes back after the first two rounds to defeat Mercer (835) by one stroke for the team title. Campbell (845) placed third, two shots better than Temple (847). Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech tied for fifth at 849.
> Wofford's Harry Jones, who was playing as an individual, was the individual medalist with a 17-under 199.

On Team
> "Overall, I am really happy with our start. We have a long way to go. If I can do a good job getting these kids aligned, to get them to do what they can do, then we will have a good weekend at Cornell."
> "It was nice to see both freshmen play an integral part of the team this week. Ethan counted three times and Joey twice. This shows depth within the program."
On McGrath
> "He is a great talent, a great player, but more importantly a great kid, who possesses a great work ethic. He has really matured on the golf course and is strong with all facets of the game.
> "His biggest improvement came when he worked hard about a year ago on pitching and chipping the golf ball, the finite things, which has helped him on par 5s. He is an incredible ball striker and when you start with that the game becomes easy."
