9.18.21 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer team (1-2-2, 0-1-0 AAC) fell to No. 18 SMU (4-0-2, 1-0-0 AAC) 4-1 Saturday night in the Owls' American Athletic Conference opener. The loss marks Temple's first loss to SMU in nearly two years after sweeping the Mustangs last season.
How it Happened
> SMU came out fast, the Mustangs fired two shots on goal in the first six minutes. Both were turned away by keeper Liam Cummings, who made his first career start for Temple.
> Temple rebounded with two shots of their own, including a dart by Gyuwon Chong that was saved by the SMU keeper.
> SMU forward Papa Ndoye scored in the 21st minute to put the Mustangs up 1-0. Five minutes later, Harvey Castro extended the lead to 2-0.
> Mike Eijgendaal and Fabian Grant both fired off shots as the half expired that were out left.
> Temple scored in the 60th minute. Tyquan Stroud found Mike Eijgendaal in the box, Eijgendaal quickly turned and found Nigel Griffith who fired the ball towards the goal. The keeper made the quick save, but the ball ricocheted off of an SMU player and crossed the line for the score.
> SMU countered with a flurry of shots. Temple made four straight team saves, including three from freshman Alex O'Leary.
> The Mustangs bagged two goals in the final ten minutes. Temple did not have another shot on goal. SMU won by a final tally of 4-1.
Game Notes
> Cummings made six saves in his first Temple action.
> Griffith and Eijgendaal both continued exceptional seasons. Griffith scored his second goal of the year while Eijgendaal had his first assist in addition to a goal from earlier in the year.
> Four yellow cards were issued in this match. Two on SMU and two on Temple.
From the Coach
> "We're here to win games. We're not just here to compete. The game was pretty even at 2-1, we made the decision to commit numbers forward, we knew the risks associated with that. We'll regroup and look to bounce back against a strong UCF side." -- head coach Brian Rowland.
