10.11.22 | Men's Golf
Burlington, N.C. – For the second straight day a Temple golfer was blistering the course, Tuesday it was senior Conor McGrath who shot a season-best five-under 66 to help lead Temple to a ninth-place finish among the 17-team field at the Phoenix Invitational.
Recapping Day One
> McGrath, who finished the tournament with a six-under 207, had seven birdies, including five in the front nine, to tie for sixth in the 100-player field.
> Graham Chase, who had a career-best six-under 65 on Monday, led the Owls and tied for fourth overall with an eight-under 205. Chase, who also set a career-low for a 54-hole tournament, had all three of his birdies on the back nine to finish his final round with a one-under 70.
> Ethan Whitney was next for the Owls, shooting a three-over 74 on the day. He tied for 41st overall with a three-over 216.
> Andrew Curran rounded out the Temple scorers with a four-over 75 and finished tied for 72nd with an 11-over 224. Jake Naese shot his third straight 79 to tie for 97th.
The Field
> Host Elon won its tournament with a 28-under 824. Stetson (-23) was five strokes behind in second. Appalachian State was a distant third (-7). The Owls finished the three-day tournament at even par.
> Elon's Garrett Risner (-14) won the tournament, defeating his teammate Bronson Myers (-13) by one stroke.
Quotable: Head coach Brian Quinn
"Obviously, Graham and Conor were tremendous this week. Graham with a career best 65 on Monday and Conor with a 66 today. Really proud of the way they played and have been playing this year.
Ethan struggled this week but looking for him to bounce back this weekend.
Really, what we need is to get our four and five guys playing better. If we do that, we can flip the script. We should not have finished worse than third in this tournament. We made some young mistakes. My job is to develop the younger guys and see who we can count on come conference championship time.
We have the ability we just need to have the belief."
