PHILADELPHIA - The Temple fencing team is ready to open the 2022-23 season, hosting the 42nd Annual Temple Open on Oct. 29-30. The individual meet will see nearly 500 fencers from 23 schools compete in one of the largest individual meets of the season, with women fencing on Saturday and men fencing on Sunday.Â
"The team is pumped for the Temple Open," head coach Jennie Salmon said. "They're ready and they want to compete. We're mindful that it's the beginning of the season and that we want to have things to improve upon, but my expectation is that we'll see some very strong finishes. We'll be competitive in every bout and it will spring board us right into the next weekend at Penn State and into the regular season."
Last season the Owls saw an impressive meet, with four fencers finishing in the top-15 and two finishing in the top-8. Cindy Long placed eighth in epee while saberist Zoe Turner led the team with a second-place finish.Â
"The Temple Open is always very exciting because it's the first chance for the girls to show us what they can do in a competitive setting," assistant coach Tasia Ford said. "We're excited to see what they bring tomorrow."
Competitors in women's foil, women's epee, and women's sabre will compete on Saturday, October 29, with men's foil, men's epee, and men's sabre competing on Sunday, October 30. On the women's side, foil will begin at 8 a.m., epee will begin at 9:30 a.m., sabre will begin at 12:30 p.m. On the men's side, epee will begin at 8 a.m., foil will begin at 9:30 a.m., and sabre will begin at 12:30 p.m.
The semifinal and final rounds for each weapon will be live streamed.
The Temple Open is one of just two chances Owl fans have to see their team on campus. In late February, the Temple Invitational in McGonigle Hall will close out the regular season for Temple.
