Temple Upsets #13 UConn, Clinches BIG EAST Tournament Berth

10.28.22 | Field Hockey

STORRS, Conn. - The Temple field hockey team defeated No. 13 UConn 3-2 for the second-straight year, the first time in program history since the 1988 and 1989 seasons. With the win, Temple clinches a berth to the BIG EAST Tournament for the third year in a row. The Owls will face No. 14 Old Dominion as the No. 4 seed next weekend in the semifinals hosted by No. 14 Old Dominion.

Recapping the Game
> Temple struck first, with Tess Muller netting a goal at the five-minute mark.
> The Owls went up 2-0 on a penalty corner conversion from Myrthe Schuilenburg in the second quarter.
> Sydney Beck's first goal of the season would be the eventual game-winner, scoring on a pass from Muller midway through the third quarter.
> The Huskies scored a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the game, but Temple would outlast the team and secure the win.

Statistically Speaking
> UConn outshot Temple 15-8, with Caitlyn Amsden, Schuilenburg, and Muller leading the team with two apiece.
> The Huskies also had the penalty corner advantage, earning five to Temple's two. The Owls successfully defended all five and converted one of their own.
> Molly Frey posted a career-high six saves.

Quotable
> "We knew what we were capable of so it was really about playing to our strengths today and preparing for their strengths. We just played phenomenally despite UConn dominating the stat sheet. Most of their opportunities came in the final quarter but we were able to manage them in the end. Kudos to Molly Frey for being able to hold them off and deal with their attacking pressure, she really had herself a day. Now we look to Lock Haven and then the conference tournament!" – head coach Michelle Vittese

Next Up
> The Cherry and White will close out the regular season at home, hosting Lock Haven on Sunday for senior day. Seven Owls will be recognized as part of senior day festivities.
