10.31.22 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple fencing team has been ranked No. 11 in the USFCA Preseason Poll, as announced by the organization.

The Owls ended the 2021-22 season ranked No. 10, going 24-14 in dual play and qualifying two fencers to the NCAA Championships. Foilist Anna Novoseltseva had a breakout freshman season, representing the Cherry and White at NCAAs and being named the USFCA Women's Team Collegiate Newcomer of the Year.

Dr. Nikki Franke, who founded the Temple fencing program and led the team for 50 years, retired in August and officially stepped down from the helm of the program last month. Jennie Salmon, two-time All-American and member of Temple's 1992 NCAA Championship team, took over the program following Franke's retirement.

20 head women's fencing coaches voted in the women's poll, ranking 15 Division I teams and eight Division III teams. The next rankings will be released in mid-January.

The Cherry and White has one preseason meet under its belt, hosting the 42nd Annual Temple Open on Oct. 29-30. Seven fencers finished in the top-15 and four finished in the top-8, with Margherita Calderaro's second-place finish leading the team. The Owls will compete in one more individual meet of the season at the Garret Open hosted by Penn State this weekend before returning to Philadelphia for the Elite Meet hosted by Penn on Nov. 19.
