Field Hockey Tops Providence in Shootout

10.7.22 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team topped Providence 2-1 in a shootout Friday afternoon, improving to 10-3 (3-1 BIG EAST) and sitting tied for second in league standings with UConn. This is the first time since 2014 that the Owls have earned 10 or more wins.

Recapping the Game
> The game started off slow, with Providence firing the lone shot of the first quarter.
> The Friars got on the board first as Nora Goddard-Despot slipped it under Molly Frey at the 25-minute mark.
> Caitlyn Amsden passed the ball from the corner and Tess Muller poked it in less than a minute into the fourth quarter to even the game.
> Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal and forced Temple's second overtime situation of the season.
> The Owls fired six shots and earned three penalty corners in the two overtime periods, but neither team found the golden goal and the game went into a shootout.
> Temple went 3-1 in the shootout, with Nienke Oerlemans, Muller, and Agustina Tucceri all netting their attempts. Tucceri scored the game-winning attempt, the first of her career.

Statistically Speaking
> Temple outshot the Friars' 14-8 and Muller's four led the team.
> Molly Frey recorded three saves, while Annie Judge posted a defensive saves.
> The Owls outcornered Providence 10-1, with the Friars' lone corner coming in the second overtime period.

Quotable
> "Providence is a really good team and they competed very well. We managed them well, but unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize on our scoring opportunities. We made some mistakes on corners and we need to be better moving forward into the final leg our conference play. I'm confident that we can address our mistakes and we'll be fine moving forward." – head coach Michelle Vittese
