Men’s Basketball Topples #16 Villanova, 68-64

11.11.22 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -   Damian Dunn made two free throws with 1.1 seconds to play to lift Temple (1-1, 1-0 Big 5) to a 68-64 win over #16 Villanova (1-1, 1-1) Friday night at the Liacouras Center.  It marked the Owls' first win over the Wildcats since 2012.

Dunn led all scorers for the second straight game with 22 points while his backcourt mate Khalif Battle added 21.  Jamille Reynolds added his first career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds.

Caleb Daniels (19) and Eric Dixon (18) led the Wildcats.

First Half
> The Owls fed the post early with Reynolds scoring the team's first six points enroute to a 6-1 lead in the first three minutes.
> A three-pointer by Dunn and another basket by Reynolds gave Temple a 13-5 advantage with just under 12 remaining in the period.
> Temple extended its lead to double-figures at the 7:10 mark, 24-11, courtesy of a four-point play by Battle.  It was the second three-pointer in 34 seconds by the Owl guard.
> The teams traded baskets until the Wildcats ran off five straight, a three by Chris Arcidiacono and a jumper by Angelo Brizzi to cut the margin to eight, 31-23, with 3:07 on the clock.
> The Wildcats cut it to six on two free throws by Brandon Slater before Dunn drained a deep three to push it to nine, 34-25, but Villanova answered with two baskets by Eric Dixon to cut the margin to 34-29 at the half.

Second Half
> The Owls started off the second half feeding Reynolds for an inside basket.  Dixon then ran off four straight points to make it a one-possession game.
> The teams traded baskets before Battle drained a deep corner three to put Temple ahead 41-35 with just under 15 to play.
> Dunn then made two baskets, the last a pullup jumper, to give Temple a 45-37 advantage.  The Wildcats answered with a 10-0 run to take their first lead, 47-45, at the 10:41 mark.
> Battle then stopped the Temple drought with a three-point play to retake the lead, 48-47.
> The lead went back and forth with neither team gaining separation.  There were 13 lead changes over the final 11 minutes.
> Jordan Longino drilled a three-pointer off a loose ball with 58 seconds left to give Villanova a 64-62 lead.
> Dunn drove the lane and was fouled on a pump fake with 45,6 seconds left.  He calmly made both to tie the game.
> After a Villanova miss, Dunn ran the clock before driving the lane and being fouled with 1.1 seconds to play.   Dunn made them both, stretching his free throw streak to 22 on the year.
> Zach Hicks added two more free throws after a steal on the final play.

Notes
> Damian Dunn extended his consecutive made free throw streak to 29, dating back to the final regular season game against USF (3/6/22).  His streak ranks fourth on the school's all-time list behind Shizz Alston, Jr. (52, 2016-17), Lynn Greer (49, 2001) and Khalif Wyatt (32, 2012-13).
> Jamille Reynolds posted his first career double-double (14 pts, 12 rebs) and set a career high in rebounds.
> The win was the first against a ranked opponent since Jan. 15, 2020, a 65-53 victory over #16 Wichita State.  It also snapped a six-game losing streak to ranked foes.
> Zach Hicks tied his career-high with four steals while Dunn set a new record with two blocks in a game.
