Dunn Scores Career-High 38, but Men’s Basketball Falls in OT to Vandy, 89-87

PHILADELPHIA - Damian Dunn scored a career-high 38 points, the most by a Temple Owl in over 18 years, but it was not enough as Vanderbilt edged Temple (1-2), 89-87 in overtime, Tuesday night at the Liacouras Center.
Dunn shot 13-of-18 from the field and made a career-high seven threes on nine attempts in the contest to lead the way. Zach Hicks had a 20-points, hitting a season-high six threes on 13 attempts, while grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Jamille Reynolds added 15 points and seven boards.
Myles Stute (21 points) and Liam Robbins (20) combined four 41 points to lead Vanderbilt (1-2).
First Half
> Temple jumped out to a 17-9 lead by the first media timeout with Dunn (8 pts) and Hicks (6) leading the way.
> The Owls extended their margin to double figures on Hicks third three of the game, making it 20-9, with 14:09 on the clock.
> Vanderbilt went on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 22-19 with 10 minutes to play.
> Dunn then answered with one of two free throws, ending his consecutive made streak at the line at 33, and then drained a three to increase the Owls lead to 26-19.
> The Commodores would not go away and used a 13-6 run to tie the game at 32 with 2:38 on consecutive three-pointers by Stute and Paul Lewis.
> The teams traded baskets the remainder of the half, going into the locker rooms deadlocked at 37.
Second Half
> Vandy opened the second half by quickly taking its first lead, 41-37, of the contest on a dunk by Quentin Millora-Brown and a driving layup by Ezra Manion.
> The teams then traded baskets until a Hicks three and a Dunn layup allowed Temple to regain the lead, 49-48.
> The Commodores answered with an 18-4 run, to take a commanding 66-53 lead with just over eight minutes remaining. Jordan Wright started it off with three straight baskets and Stute added two deep threes.
> Temple quickly got back into the game courtesy of a 9-2 run with threes from Dunn, Hysier Miller and Hicks to cut the lead to 68-62.
> Hicks would add another three, but Stute matched that to give the visitors a 73-65 advantage with 4:06 to play.
> The Owls then ran off four straight points with a Dunn three and a Miller steal and one free throw making it a two-point game, 74-72 with 1:38 to play.
> Liam Robbins answered with a three-point play for Vandy, but Dunn matched it with his sixth three of the game with 1:13 to play.
> Vandy missed on its ensuing possession and Hicks tied the game with two free throws with 16 seconds to play.
> The Commodores came up empty on their final possession, forcing overtime.
Overtime
> Vanderbilt scored seven of the first nine points of the extra frame to take an 83-78 lead with 2:42 remaining on an Ezra Manjon basket.
> The Owls rebounded to take the lead 87-86 as Dunn hit a three and converted a three-point play with 38 seconds left to cap an 9-3 run.
> Manjon made a jumper with 22 seconds left to give the Commodores an 88-87 advantage.
> Dunn then missed a driving layup with seven seconds left and Tyrin Lawrence made one of two free throws to put Vandy up by two, 89-87.
> Hicks then had his shot blocked by Robbins to end the game.
