Men’s Basketball to Take on Former Conference Rival Rutgers at Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase

11.17.22 | Men's Basketball

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Temple (1-2) will look to rebound from a second overtime loss in its first three games when it travels to the Mohegan Sun Arena to take on a former conference rival Rutgers (3-0) Friday (5 pm/ESPNU/1210 AM WPHT.) in the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase.

This is the first meeting with former conference rival Rutgers since playing two games against the Scarlet Knights in the 2013-14 season as members of the American Athletic Conference.  Each team won on its home court that season. The teams also were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference (1982-83 thru 1994-95).

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> It has been an up-and-down start to the 2022-23 season for Temple.  The Owls posted a 1-2 record in three home games, defeating the lone ranked team, #16 Villanova (68-64), while losing to unranked Wagner and Vanderbilt in overtime.
> Preseason First Team All-American Athletic Conference selection Damian Dunn leads the nation in scoring at 29.3 points per game.  He has led Temple in scoring in all three games and currently scored a career-high 38 points in the Owls' 89-87 overtime loss to Vanderbilt, the most points by a Temple player since 2004.
> Dunn is also shooting a blistering 63.4 percent from the field, 58.8 percent from three and 96.4 percent from the line, making 27-of-28 overall and leading the nation in free throws made per game (9.3 pg.)
> Three other Owls also average double figure scorers: preseason second team All-AAC Khalif Battle (13.0 ppg), Jamille Reynolds (12.0 ppg., 7.0 rpg.) and Zach Hicks (10.0 ppg).
> Hysier Miller leads the team in assists per game (4.0 apg.)
> Hicks, the Owls top three-point shooter last season, broke out of a two-game slump to 6-of-13 from distance against Vanderbilt for a season high 20 points.
> The Owls have been exceptional from the line, led by Dunn who is 28-of-29 from the charity stripe, and are making 78.4 percent from the charity stripe (28th nationally).

SCOUTING RUTGERS
> Like Temple, Rutgers has played its first three games at home, but the Scarlet Knights won all three with wins over Columbia, Sacred Heart and UMass Lowell.
> Cam Spencer leads four Rutgers double-figure scorers with a 16.7 scoring average. He also tops the team in three-point shooting, making seven-of-14 (.500), assists (12) and steals (12).
> Clifford Omoruyi (16.3 ppg., 10.3 rpg.), Aundre Hyatt (14.3 ppg.) and Derek Simpson (10.3 ppg.) also average double figures.
> Rutgers is outscoring its opponents by 28.7 ppg., and holding opponents to .360 field goal percentage and .172 three-point percentage.

SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and Rutgers have played a total of 52 times with the Owls leading the all-time series, 33-19.
> The teams have not met since the 2013-14 season when the Scarlet Knights were members of the American Athletic Conference.  They split the series that season with each team winning on its own court,
> Prior to that the teams last met on Nov.29,2006 at the Liacouras Center, a 77-54 Temple win which was then
first-year head coach Fran Dunphy's first win at the helm of the program.
> Besides being members together in the American Athletic Conference for one season (1993-94), the programs also were in the Atlantic 10 Conference from 1982 to 1995.
> This is the first regular season meeting on a neutral floor.

LAST MEETING:  @Temple 88, Rutgers 82 (Jan. 29, 2014)
> With a perfect 8-of-8 performance at the free throw line over the final 46 seconds, Temple men's basketball held off Rutgers for an 88-82 win to snap the program's longest losing streak in 38 years. The Owls got 21 points from Will Cummings and 20 from Dalton Pepper to end their eight-game skid and record their first-ever American Athletic Conference victory.
> The win avenged a New Year's Day five-point loss on the road at Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights gave Temple everything it could handle.
> The Owls led by 20 points early in the second half before Rutgers came all the way back and briefly led by a point with less than three minutes remaining.
> Cummings responded with back-to-back layups after Rutgers took the lead, and later was one of three players to be perfect at the line to seal the win.
> Along with his game-high 21 points, Cummings dished a career-high eight assists and tied his season high with three steals. Both Pepper and Cummings played all 40 minutes.
> Anthony Lee and Quenton DeCosey finished with 15 points apiece, with Lee adding a team-best eight rebounds.
> The Owls committed just six turnovers in the game, their second fewest of the season, while Rutgers turned the ball over 13 times. Temple scored 24 points off turnovers to the Scarlet Knights' eight.

LAST GAME: Vanderbilt 89, @Temple 87 (OT) (Nov. 15, 2022)
> Damian Dunn scored a career-high 38 points, the most by a Temple Owl in over 18 years, but it was not enough as Vanderbilt edged Temple, 89-87 in overtime.
> Dunn shot 13-of-18 from the field and made a career-high seven threes on nine attempts in the contest to lead the way.
> Zach Hicks had a 20-points, hitting a season-high six threes on 13 attempts, while grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.  Jamille Reynolds added 15 points and seven boards.
> Myles Stute (21 points) and Liam Robbins (20) combined four 41 points to lead Vanderbilt.
> Temple lead by as many as 11 (20-9) in the first half, but the teams were deadlocked at intermission (37-37).
> Vanderbilt used an 18-4 second half run to take a 66-53 lead with eight minutes remaining.
> The Owls climbed back with a 17-7 run.  Dunn drained two threes and dished two assists to lead the charge, pulling TU within three, 73-70 with 2:33 remaining.
> Temple finally tied the game with 16 seconds to play on two Hicks free throws and then held off Vanderbilt to force the extra frame.
> Vanderbilt scored seven of the first nine points of the extra frame to take an 83-78 lead.
> The Owls rebounded to take the lead 87-86 as Dunn hit a three and converted a three-point play with 38 seconds left to cap an 9-3 run.
> Ezra Manjon made a jumper with 22 seconds left to give the Commodores an 88-87 advantage.
> Dunn then missed a driving layup with seven seconds left and Tyrin Lawrence made one of two free throws to put Vandy up by two, 89-87.
> Hicks then had his shot blocked to end the game.

RECORDS ARE MADE TO BE TIED?
> In the season opener against Wagner, Damian Dunn tied Lynn Greer (vs. SJU, 2/2/02) for the most free throws made without a miss in Temple Basketball history, each converting 18-of-18 from the charity stripe.
> This is nothing new for Dunn, who has a knack of getting to foul line.  He has averaged 5.2 made per game on 64 attempts for his entire career.
> Dunn extended his streak to 33 straight without a miss (dating back to Mar. 6, 2022) before missing at the line against Vanderbilt.  It ranks as the third longest streak in Temple history behind Shizz Alston, Jr.  (52, 2016-17) and Lynn Greer (49, 2001).
> He currently ranks first in the nation in free throws made per game (9.0).
> As a redshirt freshman in 2020-21, he averaged 6.1 made and 7.9 attempts per game at the foul line to rank fifth nationally in both categories.

IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT HISTORY
> This is the 84th in-season tournament/classic that Temple has competed in during its program history.
>The Owls own a 102-75 overall record in tournament/classic games.
>Temple has won 15 tournament championships (not including single-game classics). The Owls have won two tournaments over the last six seasons: 2017 Charleston Classic; 2016 Preseason NIT.
> This is the first visit for the Owls to the Mohegan Sun Arena, and the first in-season tournament/classic matchup with Rutgers.
