Women's Basketball Throttles Georgetown, 78-61 in First Win of Richardson Era

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 AAC) hammered BIG EAST foe Georgetown (1-1, BIG EAST) in its home opener. The win was the first for Head Coach Diane Richardson, as well as the first in Temple women's basketball's return to the Liacouras Center.
Statistical Leaders
> Aleah Nelson: game-high 19 points, game-high 7 assists.
> Tiarra East: 14 points, team-high 7 rebounds.
First Quarter: Temple 19, Georgetown 16
> Temple started off hot, but Georgetown quickly responded to take a 7-4 lead.
> Temple continued to fight despite an injury to Jasha Clinton and early foul trouble for Ines Piper to tie it up 15-15.
> Clinton came back late in the first quarter to help Temple close out the period strong and take a 19-16 lead.
> Temple's bench took advantage of its chances and contributed 8 points.
Second Quarter: Temple 33, Georgetown 29
> Temple and Georgetown continued playing tight defense to open the second. A three for Georgetown were the only points scored in the opening minutes by the Hoyas. Tying the game 19-19.
> Temple responded by going on a 7-0 run to take a 26-19 lead.
> Georgetown slowly cut into the Temple lead as the quarter wore on, but a few timely buckets kept Temple ahead.
> Aleah Nelson had her way in the first half scoring 8 points and dishing out 4 assists.
Third Quarter: Temple 57, Georgetown 40
> Nelson picked up right where she left off by scoring a 4-point play to give Temple a 37-32 lead.
> The Baltimore native continued giving Temple an offensive spark to lead Temple on quick a 7-0 run.
> Temple continued dominating the quarter as the extend run became 15-2. Temple led 52-36 at this point.
> Nelson scored 9 in the quarter as Clinton added 8 to go along with her 3 assists.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 78, Georgetown 61
> Both teams began trading basket to open the quarter. 63-49 Temple lead.
> The Owls caught fire down the stretch, scoring 18 points in the final eight minutes.
> Nelson led the way with 19 points while three other Temple players reached double figures.
