Women’s Basketball Hosts Big 5 Rival La Salle in Second Game in Three Days

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (3-5, 0-0 AAC) will play its second game in just three days Monday. The Cherry & White will play host to Big 5 rival La Salle for its third Big 5 battle of the season.
LAST TIME OUT: UMBC 53, @ Temple 68
> Temple bested UMBC 68-53 at Liacouras Center Saturday as the second half of a doubleheader with the men's team.
> The two sides were neck and neck until the fourth quarter when Temple caught fire, outscoring the Retrievers 22-7 in the final frame.
> Ines Piper had the best game of her young Temple career thus far. The forward set season-highs in both points and rebounds with nine each.
THE OWLS
> Temple battled through a tough schedule in the month of November. The Owls' November slate was ranked 20th in strength of schedule according to the RPI. The Cherry & White battled two ranked opponents in the first month of the season for the first time since 2010.
> Aleah Nelson is one of the best offensive players in the American Athletic Conference. She ranks third in points per game (16.0), and second in assists per game (5.5). The point guard has led Temple in scoring in three of the Owls' five games and has scored in double-figures in all games expect for the opener against No. 24 Princeton.
> Tiarra East leads the team in rebounds (6.0) and is fourth in minutes per game (26.1).
> Tarriyonna Gary ranks sixth in the AAC in field goal percentage (.463) and is second in the conference in three point percentage (.455).
SCOUTING LA SALLE
> The Explorers had their first winning season since 2016-17 last year. They finished 16-12 with a 9-6 mark in the Atlantic-10. The team got hot at the end of the season, winning its last four games to close out the year before falling in the A-10 tournament.
> La Salle is 6-3 this season. They defeated city rival Drexel 77-74 but fell in their only Big 5 game so far against Penn.
> Kayla Spruill has had a fantastic career at La Salle. The forward was named Second Team All A-10 and Big 5 in 2020-21 and earned First Team honors in both last season. She is averaging 15.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest, leading the Explorers in both. She put up 26 points Saturday in La Salle's win over Lehigh.
> Mountain MacGillivray leads La Salle in his fifth season. A Temple graduate, MacGillivray has increased the Explorers' win percentage every season since taking the program over in 2018. He is 53-71 in time at La Salle.
SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and La Salle have met 48 times in history. The Owls are 27-21.
> TU has taken the last seven games and have won 20 out of the last 21 battles between the Philly rivals.
> The Owls have not seen La Salle since 2019 due both of the last two scheduled contests being canceled due to Covid-19 issues. In 2019 when the two last played, Temple won a 72-69 nailbiter at the Explorers.
