2022 Women's Volleyball Season in Review

12.5.22 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA - The 2022 Temple volleyball team under the guidance of first-year head coach Linda Hampton-Keith featured gutty team play, an improved record, and outstanding individual performances.

The Cherry and White squad improved on its win total from the 2021 season, earning 10 wins, going 10-21. The Owls played an AAC-most 11 times in five sets, going 7-4, with three of those wins coming against conference opponents Tulane (two times) and South Florida.

Individually, sophomore Taylor Davenport sparked the Temple offense this season, transitioning from middle blocker to outside hitter. The Columbia, S.C. native ended the season fifth overall in the conference in kills per/set (3.61), and kills (451), points (515), and points/set (4.12).  It was the first time an Owl since the 2015 season reached at least 400 kills in a season and also marks the fourth highest output in the 25-point scoring format. In 2022, Davenport recorded double-digit kills in 20 of the team's 31 matches. The outside hitter had nine matches this past season where she earned at least 20 kills, including a career-high 27 versus St. Francis Brooklyn on Sept. 3. Not only was Davenport impressive on the attack, but she also blossomed as a server. Davenport had 26 services in 2022, ranking her second on the team. To end the season, Davenport had at least one service ace in 11 of the final 13 matches, including two times, tying her career-high with six. In conference play, Davenport ranked ninth with .30 aces/set.

Junior transfer Jelena Prolic was a key piece in the improvement to the Owls in 2022. Prolic showed her value in both the offensive and defensive production, but also as a leader on and off the floor. The Subotica, Serbia native played in all 32 matches, finishing with the second-most kills and digs on the team with 320 and 400, respectively. Offensively, Prolic tallied double-digit kills in 17 of the 31 matches. On Oct. 5, Prolic set a new career-best with 24 kills versus East Carolina. Additionally, the outside hitter has recorded 11 double-doubles this season, including back-to-back matches on Sept. 30 versus Tulane with 15 kills and 13 digs and then 11 kills and 15 digs on Oct. 2 versus Houston.

Sophomore setter Patrycja Zielinska quarterbacked the Owls' offense this season with 795 assists, ranking her sixth in the conference overall. Zielinska had a strong season from the service line with a team-best 32 aces. Her .35 aces/set ranked her fourth in the AAC matches. The Franciszkow, Poland native played in 28 of the 31 matches where she recorded 20 or more assists in 18 contests. In 8 of those 18 matches, Zielinska would put up 40-plus assists, including a new career-high of 62 against on Oct. 23 versus Memphis.

Libero Falanika Danielson came into the season needing just over 200 digs to eclipse 1000-digs for her career and on Oct. 5 versus East Carolina, Danielson recorded 17 digs to achieve that prestigious mark. Danielson led the Owls in digs in 19 of the 31 matches, including four matches of over 20 digs. On the season, the Ewa Beach, Hawaii native led the Owls and was sixth in the conference with 434 digs.

Redshirt-senior Peyton Boyd had her finest season statistically in an Owls uniform. The Dumfries, Va.  native played a career-high 125 sets in 31 matches, while putting up a career-high 307 kills and 13 service aces. On Sunday, Oct 30, versus Tulane, Boyd recorded her third double-double of the season with 20 kills and 15 digs. The right-side hitter had 33 attempts and just one error, leading to a .576 hitting percentage against the Green Wave. On the season, Boyd had three double-doubles that included two matches of 20 or more kills and 10 digs and a string of four matches, totaling 62 kills.

Freshman Samantha Jo Mikosky had a banner year at the middle blocker position with 110 total blocks, ranking her fifth overall in AAC in that category. On Sept.10 versus Colgate, Mikosky set a career-high with 11 blocks, which ranks as the third-best mark in school history for a single match.

Fellow sophomore setter Magdalena Rogalska totaled 433 assists on the season, ranking her 10th overall in the AAC with 5.77 assists/set. Like Zielinska, Rogalska recorded 40 or more assists on multiple occasions this season. On Sept. 30, in a five-set win versus Tulane, Rogalska recorded 55 assists and followed it up with a career-high performance versus East Carolina with 58. On Oct. 30, Rogalska added 46 assists in the five-set win at Tulane.
