Castrence wins two events, earns second all-around championship this season
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Sunday, at the George Washington Tri-Meet, the Temple gymnastics team fell to No. 29 NC State (196.025), and the host team, Colonials (195.825) at the Smith Center with a score of 194.875.
HOW IT HAPPENED
> Temple senior Ariana Castrence competed in the all-around for the second time this season as won with a score of 39.200, tying the eighth-best score in program history. The Walfdorf, Md. native earned wins on the vault and the uneven bars.
> The Owls started slow with scores in the 48's in the first two rotations (beam, floor), but turned it around on the final two rotations (vault, bars) with scores in the 49's.
> Freshman Sarah Stallings and Sophomore Brooke Donabedian put together scores of 9.8 or better of their respective routines.
BEAM
> The Cherry and White scored 48.000 in the first rotation, while only three gymnasts would score 9.8 or better.
> Freshman Hannah Stallings led the Owls with a 9.825 on the beam, good for a tie of fourth-place overall.
> Castrence and Donabedian would also earn matching 9.8's, their sixth and fourth 9.8 or better, respectively, this season on the apparatus.
FLOOR
> In rotation two, the Owls would go move their strongest event of the season, but continued to struggle with a 48.650 team score.
> Led by a 9.825 from Tori Edwards, Donabedian was the only other TU gymnast to score at least a 9.8.
> Renee Schugman and Faith Leary added a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.
VAULT
> Temple turned it around in the third rotation on the vault with a 49.050, tying for the fifth-best mark in school history.
> Each of six TU gymnasts scored at least a 9.700.
> Led by the winner Castrence's winning 9.875, freshman Anna Hill finished in third place as set a personal-best score of 9.850. Sarah Stallings also pitched in with a 9.8, marking the second time this season she's reached that mark.
> Hannah Stallings and Mackenzie Aresta added 9.775 and 9.725 scores, respectively.
BARS
> The Owls closed out the night on a strong note with the third-best score in school history (49.175).
> All six Cherry and White gymnasts scored at least a 9.775, including five of the six scoring at least a 9.8.
> Sarah Stallings and Castrence would earn the win in the event with 9.875, marking career-highs for both gymnasts. Castrence tied her career-high from just two days ago at NC State, while Stallings improves her career-best by .75.
> Two other gymnasts tied or improved their career bests, including Caitlin Gray and Hannah Stallings scored 9.775 and 9.825, respectively.
> Madison Brooks and Donabedian rounded out the impressive team effort with matching 9.8's.
Temple will return home to McGonigle Hall for a pair of meets this coming week, March 3 and March 6. The Owls will host Maryland, Bridgeport, and Southern Connecticut State on Thursday on March 3 at 6 p.m. and will host senior day on March 6 against Ursinus, New Hampshire, and West Chester, starting 4:30 p.m.
