PHILADELPHIA – Temple University men's crew coach Brian Perkins was named the Matt Ledwith Award recipient as the 2022 Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta Coach of the Year on Friday. The Matt Ledwith Award is presented annually to a Dad Vail Coach who has a distinguished record of accomplishment and who personifies character traits worthy of emulation in a quest to encourage student athletes to uphold the highest traditions and practices.
In his six years at the helm, Perkins has led Temple to its first-ever Dad Vail men's points trophy (2021) and the Owls' Varsity 8 to gold medals in both 2018 and 2021. In 2018, Temple became the first men's team to win gold medals in the Varsity 8, Junior Varsity 8 and Freshman 8 in the history of the Regatta. The Varsity 8 set a new record for fastest time at the Dad Vail, which was later surpassed by the Owls 2021 crew.
In 2019 and 2021, every single member of Temple Crew made a Dad Vail Grand Final. In 2018, Perkins took his Dad Vail winning Varsity 8 to the prestigious Royal Henley Regatta in England. It was the program's first trip to the Henley since 1994.
Perkins, who was a four-year member of the Owls crew team (1988-92) as well as a two-time Dad Vail champion, served as an assistant coach for seven years (2009-16) under legendary Temple coach Dr. Gavin White. Still on staff as coach emeritus, White has received the Matt Ledwith Award twice.
As an assistant coach, Perkins guided the 2010 and 2012 Freshman 4+s to Dad Vail gold medals, the 2011 L4+ to a silver, and in White's final year helped get the Varsity 8 back onto the podium with a bronze in 2016.
