The 2021-22 Academic Award goes Cassie Navalta!

 

The fencing team's Academic Award for the 2021-22 season was awarded to Cassie Navalta. Cassie, a senior from Medfield, Mass., had a solid performance in her final season on North Broad, going 27-12 in dual play. Cassie saw her best mark at the Duke Invitational, where she posted a team-leading 9-0 record. She tied for 24th at the Temple Open in the squad’s second-best finish of the day and earned a 35th place finish at the Penn State Open. At the Stella Awards, the foil squad leader was named to the Trustee Ten for having one of the ten highest GPA's among Temple student-athletes and was a Female Sport Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The 2021-22 Most Improved Player Award goes Alex Weinberg!

 

The fencing team's Most Improved Player for the 2021-22 season was Alex Weinberg. Alex, a sophomore from Bernardsville, N.J., showed improvement in her second season in Cherry and White. The saberist recorded a 37-30 record in dual play to end the season ranked No. 18 regionally. Weinberg was selected to compete in NCAA Regionals, with her 14th place finish leading the sabre squad. She saw a season-best mark 15-10 mark over two days at the Northwestern Multi Meet, and her dual play record tied for the best record on the sabre squad.

The 2021-22 Most Valuable Player Award (Epee) goes Naomi Ross!

 

The fencing team's Most Valuable Player (Epee) for the 2021-22 season was Naomi Ross. Naomi, a junior from Aurora, Colo., went 40-26 in dual play and ended the season ranked No. 8 in the region. This was the second time in her career that she was selected for the NCAA Championships, with the 2020 tournament being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team captain competed at NCAA Regionals where she earned a third-place finish and First-Team All-Region honors. At the NCAA Championship, she finished in 19th place with eight bout wins to help lead the Owls to a 16th place finish overall. Naomi was also named a Women's Epee Collegiate Athlete of the Year Finalist by the USFCA.

The 2021-22 Most Valuable Player Award (Sabre) goes Emma Pincus!

 

The fencing team's Most Valuable Player (Sabre) for the 2021-22 season was Emma Pincus. Emma, a junior from Weddington N.C., took home gold at the NIWFA Championships, earning Temple’s second-straight individual sabre title. Emma advanced to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals for the second time in her career (last year’s meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), where she had the second-best sabre finish for the Owls after tying for 16th. Her overall record for the season came in at 38-26, earning the squad’s most wins this year. Emma finished the season ranked No. 15 regionally and saw a 31st place finish at the Temple Open and a 21st place finish at the Penn State Open for the Cherry and White’s third-best sabre mark of the day.

The 2021-22 Most Valuable Player Award (Foil) goes Anna Novoseltseva!

 

The fencing team's Most Valuable Player (Foil) for the 2021-22 season was Anna Novoseltseva. Anna, a freshman from Grand Rapids, Mich., qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing seventh at Regionals and earning All-Region Second Team honors. In South Bend, Ind., the foilist placed 21st with six bout wins to help lead the Owls to a 16th place finish overall. In the regular season, she went 37-26 and earned a No. 14 regional ranking. Anna earned gold at the NIWFA Championships, the second-straight season Temple has won the individual foil title. Anna was named the Women's Team Collegiate Newcomer of the Year by the USFCA for her fantastic season on the strip.
