PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (0-0-1) is set to travel to Vestal, N.Y., on Sunday, Aug. 21 to face off against AEC competitor, Binghamton (0-1-0) in their first road match of the season. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live from the Bearcats Sports Complex on ESPN+.
The Owls
The Owls
- The Owls opened their 2022 debut with a 1-1 draw against Big Ten competitor, Maryland on Thursday night at the Temple Sports Complex. The Cherry and White's offensive efforts were spearheaded by Emily Kavanaugh, as she netted a header in the 63rd minute off a Gabriela Johnson corner kick that resulted in a goalie deflection inside the box.
- Just three minutes later, Maryland answered back with a goal of their own, but a seven-save performance from goalkeeper Kamryn Stablein would be enough to hold the Terps to just one goal and end the match in a draw. With Stablein's performance on Thursday, she now has posted 165 career saves as an Owl, moving up to No. 9 in Temple women's soccer history.
- Kavanaugh had a breakout season last year, consistently leading the team in both goals and points over the course of 16-games. The standout forward netted seven goals, while adding an assist to finish the year with 15 points. Her 15-point performance proved to be enough to earn First Team All-Conference honors, being only the second student-athlete in Temple women's soccer history to receive the honor since joining the conference in 2013. As Kavanaugh returns for her fifth and final year, she was named to the AAC Preseason All-Conference squad as announced by the league coaches.
- Temple is coming off a 5-8-3 record 2021 record, which included a 2-6-0 conference performance to land them eighth in the American Athletic Conference at the conclusion of the season, falling just four points short of a tournament bid. As the Owls return in the 2022 season, the squad moved up a spot in the preseason poll as announced by the league on Aug. 18, sitting at No. 7.
- Binghamton opened the 2022 season on the road at Buffalo on Thursday night, dropping 4-1, despite taking the lead in the first half. Peyton Gillmore netted the lone goal for the Bearcats.
- Last year, Bearcats posted a .500 record, going 8-8-3 on the season, which included a 4-3-2 AEC performance. Binghamton posted conference wins over Vermont (1-0, 2OT), UMBC (4-1), Hartford (1-0) and NJIT (2-1, 2OT). The Bearcats earned a bid to the AEC tournament but lost 2-0 in the quarterfinals to a strong Albany squad.
- Maya Anand returns for the Bearcats as the 2021 leading scorer. Last year, Anand netted six goals and added three assists for a team-high 15 points. The McKnight sisters will also prove to be a force to be reckoned with, as they combined for a total of 10 goals and six assists in 2021, sitting at second and third in the team point category.
- The matchup between the Owls and the Terps marks the seventh time the teams have met in program history with a contest record of 3-2-1. The teams' last meeting came in 2021, where the Owls recorded a 0-0 draw against the Bearcats. Prior to 2021, the Owls had not seen the Bearcats since their 2-0 victory in 2014.
