Men’s Soccer Downs Lehigh 1-0 to Open Season
8.25.22 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 AAC) toppled the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (0-1-0, 0-0-0, Patriot) 1-0 Thursday night. Yann Koumei netted the game winner in only the 6th minute. This is the first time Temple has won a home season opener since 2016.
How it Happened
> Temple's goal came on the first shot of the match. Mike Eijgendaal found space on fast break coming down the right side of the box. The forward found Yann Kouemi streaking down the center of the field between two Lehigh defenders and was able to chip the ball over the Lehigh keeper for his first goal in Cherry and White.
> Eoin Gawronski made impressive back-to-back saves in the 22nd and 23rd minutes to keep the sheet clean.
> Sandwiched between the two Gawronski saves was perhaps the most impressive play of the night. A rebound after Gawronski's first save careened out and was lined up perfectly for a strike by Lehigh. Defender Elyad Shojaei managed to get into the goal and block the shot for a spectacular team save.
> Neither side was able to break through for the rest of the first half, keeping it at 1-1 going into halftime.
> The second half was remarkably quiet. Only one shot found it's mark in the entire frame. The lone shot on goal was saved by Gawronski.
> Temple took the win by a score of 1-0.
Game Notes
> Several players made their Temple debuts. Sawyer Koza, Rocco Häufglöckner, Ferran Vera Filella, Draven Barnett, Koumei, Fridtjof Andberg, and Shojaei all saw their first action in Cherry and White.
> This was the fifth shutout of Gawronski's career in only his 13th game.
> 507 attended the match, the most at a Temple men's soccer game since 2019.
> Six total cards were pulled in the match. Three on each side.
From the Coach
> "Winning is good. We played gritty, we still need to improve in some areas, but that's ok. We did some things really well and some guys played really well." -- head coach Brian Rowland.
Up Next
> The Owls return to TSC Monday as they host BIG EAST foe Seton Hall. The 7 p.m. match will be streamed on ESPN+. Attendance in free to all fans.
