Comeback Effort Falls Short as Men’s Soccer Stumbles at No. 19/9 Georgetown
9.2.22 | Men's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Temple men's soccer team (1-1-1, 0-0-0 AAC) fell to No. 19/9 Georgetown 5-2 on Friday afternoon. Georgetown jumped up out to an early 3-0 lead, but Temple battled back with two goals in the second half. The Hoyas stretched the lead out late in the match as Temple was forced to commit numbers forward to attempt to even the score.
How it Happened
> Georgetown scored three goals in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the half.
> It was clear early in the second that the Owls were mounting a comeback. Mike Eijgendaal fired a shot on frame quickly and goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski made two saves in quick succession.
> Gawronski made another save followed by a yellow card in the box for the Hoyas resulting in a penalty kick opportunity.
> Eijgendaal cashed in on the PK to get the Owls on the board in the 58th minute.
> Only two minutes later, Temple struck again. Eijgendaal drove the end line and found Yann Kouemi open in the front of the goal. Kouemi got a fantastic touch on the ball to redirect it to the opposite corner of the goal and pull Temple within one score.
> Temple nearly scored again twice, with Lleyton Imparato, Kouemi, and Sawyer Koza all getting strong chances that just missed their mark.
> The Hoyas scored twice more late in the match as Temple attempted to push the ball forward and score again. Georgetown took the final by a score of 5-2.
Game Notes
> Lawrence Kwazema, George Medill, and Guy Panzner all made their Cherry and White debuts.
> Eijgendaal has either scored or assisted on all four of Temple's goal thus far in the season.
> Draven Barnett and Fridtjof Andberg played their third consecutive full 90s. They, along with Gawronski, have played every minute this season.
> Elyad Shojaei missed today's game due to a red card against Seton Hall. He will be back in action Monday.
> Only three cards were pulled in this match. Two on the Hoyas, and one on Temple.
From the Coach
"We shot ourselves early against a good team, but to be fair to the guys, we challenged them at halftime and they responded very well. I was really proud of their response, and I was really proud of their effort in the second half." - Head Coach Brian Rowland
