Women’s Basketball Visits Memphis for Key AAC Matchup

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (7-10, 2-3 AAC) hits the road for a trip to Tennessee to face off against the Memphis Tigers (10-8, 2-3 AAC) this Saturday at 3 p.m. eastern. This is a critical early matchup in the American Athletic Conference standings, the two sides are currently tied for sixth place in the conference and are only one game behind fourth place SMU and ECU.
LAST TIME OUT: Tulsa 69 @ Temple 57
> Temple dropped its second straight game, falling to first place Tulsa, 69-57.
> Tulsa took a 20-point lead in the opening frame. Despite several second half surges, the Owls could not close the gap. The Owls set a season-high in steals (12) and a season-low in turnovers (9).
> Shooting guard Tarriyonna Gary scored 19 points while hitting 5-8 from beyond the arc. This was her best performance since scoring a career-high 23 against Villanova in November.
THE OWLS
> Aleah Nelson continues to lead Temple in both scoring (14.8) and assists (4.2). Nelson earned her way back into double figures last game for her fourth double digit performance in five outings.
> Jasha Clinton pairs with Nelson in the Owls' backcourt. The guard is averaging 11.4 ppg and 3.0 apg, she is second on the team in both categories.
> Tiarra East has emerged as one of the best players off the bench in the AAC. The wing had another strong outing against Tulsa, putting up 12 points. The sophomore is scoring 10.9 ppg and pulling down a team-best 6.2 rpg.
> Shooting guard Gary broke out of a recent slump against the Golden Hurricane. She is averaging 9.0 ppg and is fourth in the American in 3-point percentage (.388).

> Memphis had a solid 2021-22 campaign, earning its first winning record (16-12) since the 2015-16 season. The Tigers went 6-9 in conference play and won their opening round game versus 10 seed East Carolina in the conference tournament before dropping to 2 seed USF.
> This season, the team sits at 10-8. Since the two sides last met in late December, Memphis has gone 2-2 with losses against South Florida and ECU and blowout wins over SMU and Cincinnati. Temple and Memphis have shared three opponents since their last meeting, with both sides falling to USF and ECU, and defeating Cincinnati.
> Madison Griggs and Emani Jefferson have been players to watch for Memphis. Shutes is a fifth-year guard who leads the Tigers in scoring (14.4 ppg). Jefferson is a junior guard pacing the Tigers in rebounds (4.9 rpg) and putting up 9.2 points per contest.
> Katrina Merriweather has been at the helm for Memphis since last season. Merriweather has overseen a tremendous turnaround for a program that had only seen one winning season in the previous eight years. Before her time as a Tiger, Merriweather was the head coach at Wright State for five seasons where she was the first coach in program history to lead the Raiders to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. She is 26-20 at Memphis and 139-67 overall.
