Luoma Leads Volleyball to a 3-1 Victory Over Charlotte

Temple improves to 14-7 overall this season
CHARLOTTE – Behind graduate transfer Avery Luoma's overall play, the Temple Owls' volleyball improved to 14-7 overall on the season and 4-5 in American Athletic Conference play with a 25-23, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21 victory over the Charlotte 49ers (9-12, 2-7 AAC) in Halton Arena on Friday night. Luoma earned her fifth double-double of the season as she tied a match-high 12 kills, a season-high 21 digs, and a season-high six blocks in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Including Luoma's 12, a trio of Owls recorded double-digit kills on the night including senior Taylor Davenport with 12. Junior middle block Chelci Banks recorded her fourth double-digit kill match this season with 10.
- Senior Jelena Prolic added a career-high 19 digs in the victory.
- On her way to her third double-double of the season, freshman setter Lexi Yoza added her fourth 20-assists effort of the season with a match-high 25 and tied her career-high with 12 digs.
SET 1 (TU 25, CHA 23)
- The Owls soared to a 6-1 early advantage in set one, getting a pair of kills from graduate transfer Olivia Vance and one from junior Chelci Banks.
- The 49ers went on a 11-5 run to take a 12-11 lead, including a stretch that where they scored three straight points with a kill from Jessica Ricks and a service ace from Annika Wetterstrom.
- The Cherry and White grabbed the advantage just two points later and didn't let go. Over the last 14 Owls' points, Banks led her squad with three of team-high four kills in the set.
- Vance matched Banks for the team-high with four kills in the set, but it was middle blocker Banks who hit set-best .286.
SET 2 (TU 16, CHA 25)
- Early on in set two, both teams jockeyed for control, but Temple worked to take a four-point advantage, 14-10, getting a kill from Vance and three errors by Charlotte.
- Just as the Cherry and White took the lead, the 49ers scored five straight to take a lead into the media timeout. In that span, the home team got a pair of kills from Sydney Baham and one from Nina Parker
- The last 14 of 17 points were scored by the 49ers, including six straight to seal the set victory.
- The senior outside hitter Davenport led Temple in the loss with a perfect hitting percentage with four kills.
SET 3 (TU 25, CHA 20)
- Much like set one, the two teams played it close. Going into the media timeout, Charlotte held a 15-14 lead and then forced Temple to take a timeout after going on a 3-1 run as they recorded a pair of blocks assists from Lara Kretschmer and Wetterstrom.
- After falling behind by three points, the Owls turned the set around, tying the score 20-20 with the help of a two of Luoma's five kills in the third set. Additionally during the run, Davenport and freshman Samantha Jo Mikosky added pair of block assists.
- With Luoma at serve, the Owls scored five unanswered points with Luoma getting a one of her match-high two service aces.
- Luoma led the Owls in the third set with five kills on 12 total attacks for a .333 hitting percentage.
SET 4 (TU 25, CHA 21)
- The 49ers would score the first point of set four, but that was the only time in the final set they had control of the lead.
- The Owls jumped out to a 5-1 lead, getting an ace from Luoma and kills from senior Jelena Prolic, Davenport, and Luoma.
- TU extended its lead to a set-high seven points (20-13), but the 49ers wouldn't go away easy. Cutting the lead to three points (21-18), the home team got a pair of kills from Annika Thompson and one from Jessica Ricks.
- Davenport sealed match point for the Owls with her 12th and final kill.
