Vance Selected as a Demonstrator for 2023 AVCA Convention

11.1.23 | Women's Volleyball

This is the second year AVCA has given Demonstrator Scholarships

PHILADELPHIA Temple University graduate transfer Olivia Vance has been selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association to attend the 2023 AVCA Convention in Tampa, Fla. on Dec. 13-17 as a demonstrator scholarship recipient.

"I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to participate in the AVCA convention and get to watch the best of college volleyball in person. It's a great networking event and will give me a glimpse into the coaching world. It also gives me the chance to continue to be on the court in December and I'm looking forward to it. Tampa here I come!," expressed Vance.

The Demonstrator Scholarship program is a byproduct of the NIL landscape. Until 2021, it would not have been possible to pay to bring student-athletes to the event, but now the rules allow the AVCA to offer scholarships that cover event registration and hotel costs so the 30 players can attend the AVCA Convention.

The successful scholarship program has included more than 75 players in its three years. In addition to responsibilities during on-court sessions, the group will be able to attend other educational seminars—many of which focus on professional and personal development for coaches—and learn more about the profession by networking with the hundreds of coaches attending the Convention. One of the factors in the selection of the demonstrators was their interest in pursuing a coaching career.

The 2023 demonstrators are a diverse group that includes 24 indoor players and six beach players. They play for 29 different schools in 19 states and represent a good mix of positions and classes. The demonstrators also come from many levels of collegiate competition, as there are 12 Division I players, eight Division II players, six Division III players, and four from NAIA.

In 19 matches this season, the Saline, Mich. native is third on Owls with 181 kills, averaging 2.88 kill per set. On the defensive side, Vance has 50 total blocks and is third on the squad with 14 solo blocks.

Vance and the Cherry & White are in action on Thursday and Friday at home in McGonigle Hall against the South Florida Bulls. Match times are slated for 4 p.m. ET on Thursday and 12 p.m. ET on Friday. Both matches will be available on ESPN+.
