Women’s Basketball Takes Down Bucknell, 77-53

PHILADELPHIA – Temple (2-1, 0-0) stormed to victory over Bucknell (0-2, 0-0), 77-53 Saturday night at Liacouras Center. It is Temple's second victory of 20 or more points out of the first three contests. All five starters (Aleah Nelson, Demi Washington, Ines Piper, Rayne Tucker and Tiarra East) scored in double figures alongside Kendall Currence.
The Owls' suffocating defense set the tone early, forcing 24 total turnovers and allowing only 53 points. Temple absolutely dominated the glass, grabbing 48 rebounds (the most since 2-2-22 at Wichita State) and 22 offensive rebounds (the most since 2-18-2016 against Memphis).
First Quarter: Temple 15, Bucknell 6
> The Owls crashed the boards early, grabbing four offensive rebounds in the first two minutes of play. Nelson scored the first point of the game at the line after two and a half scoreless minutes.
>The first field goal of the game came with 6:21 remaining in the quarter. Washington snagged an offensive rebound for an easy putback layup. Temple kept Bucknell scoreless for the first 5:06 of the game. The Owls led 5-2 at the first media timeout.
> Scoring picked up towards the end of the first quarter, as TU began to build a lead, scoring the last five points to a 15-6 advantage at the conclusion of the frame.
> Throughout the first quarter, Temple totaled 17 rebounds, including 11 offensive.
> Washington had her best quarter so far as an Owl, leading all players in both points (6) and rebounds (4). Piper impressed with three blocks.
Second Quarter: Temple 41, Bucknell 17
> The Owls scored the first two buckets of the second quarter to force a timeout from the Bison (19-6, TU). Temple's defense stifled the visitors, Bucknell did not score for the first 3:57 of the period.
> Temple continued to dominate, knocking down three-straight field goals during a 12-0 run to give the Owls a 33-9 advantage with 5:47 left in the half.
> The Owls stayed hot throughout the quarter. Nelson scored six of Temple's last 10 points as the Cherry & White built a 41-17 lead going into the half. Temple held Bucknell without a field goal during the final 3:35 in the half.
> Piper led all scorers with eight points, Currence grabbed eight boards.
Third Quarter: Temple 58, Bucknell 31
> The third quarter began slowly, with only four total points in the first 3:30 of game time, two of which were scored by a Nelson field goal. The basket gave Temple a 26-point lead over Bucknell.
> Temple went on a 7-2 run, with the forwards scoring a majority of the buckets.
> The Owls defense strangled Bucknell, allowing 14 points in the frame and holding the Bison to 3-14 from the field. Temple forced Bucknell to go without a field goal in the last 5:02 of the quarter.
> Currence led all scorers in the period with six points.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 77, Bucknell 53
> In the first 45 seconds of the quarter, Piper bucketed a three-pointer which carried the Cherry and White to a 30-point lead.
> The Owls scored eight of the first 10 points of the quarter.
> Currence found her way to the line to become the sixth Owl in double figures as Temple bled out the clock.
Game Notes
> Piper and Tucker combined for four blocks in the first five minutes.
> Piper's three blocks are the most an Owl has had in a game since she recorded six against Houston on 2/18/23.
> The Owls nearly tripled the Bison's 12 rebounds with 32 throughout the first half, earning 18 offensive.
> Temple spent no time trailing during the entire game
> Temple averaged one point per each of its 37 possessions in the first half.
> East swiped a career-high six steals. Her previous career-high five steals was against La Salle on 12/5/22.
