Women’s Basketball Faces First Road Test of the Year at No. 23 Ole Miss

11.13.23 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (2-1) hits the road for the first time this season as the team heads south to face No. 23 Ole Miss (1-1). This will be Temple's first ranked opponent of the season. The game will stream on SEC Network+ and the Varsity Network App.

LAST TIME OUT: Bucknell 53 @ Temple 77
> Temple bounced back in a big way Saturday night, slamming Bucknell 77-53. It is Temple's second 20+ point victory of the young season.
> The Cherry & White got out to an early advantage and never looked back, leading for all 40 minutes of the contest. The Owls established a double-digit lead early in the second quarter and never let the Bison back in the game, building a 24-point lead by halftime.
> Temple controlled the ball all night long, forcing 24 turnovers by the Bison and grabbing 48 rebounds. Among the 48 total rebounds were 22 offensive rebounds, the most since 2-1-2017 against No. 1 UConn.
> Six players scored in double-figures (Aleah Nelson, Demi Washington, Ines Piper, Rayne Tucker, Kendall Currence, and Tiarra East). This comes only six days a program record eight players scored in double figures against Delaware State to open the season. It is the first time 5 or more players have scored in double-figures in one week in program history.

THE OWLS
> Ines Piper leads the Owls in scoring (11.0 ppg), rebounds (8.3 rpg), and blocks (1.4 bpg). She recorded her first career D1 double-double in Temple's program record setting 66 point win over Delaware State on Monday. Piper ranks 15th nationally and first in the AAC in total rebounds (25) and is 26th and leading the AAC in total blocks (5). Her three blocks in Saturday's 77-53 win over Bucknell are the most a Temple player has recorded since she put up six against Houston last season.
> Freshman point guard Tristen Taylor has proven to be a force on the defensive end. She is averaging 6.3 ppg and ranks fifth in the conference in steals per game (2.6). Taylor is the first Owl to record 4 or more steals in back-to-back games since Alexa Williamson in March of 2021.
> Aleah Nelson ranks eighth in the AAC in assists per game (3.67). In her five-year collegiate career, Nelson has scored 1,308 points and passed for 466 assists her career. She will look to be only the third player in Temple women's basketball history to score 1000 points and pass for 500 assists all time.

SCOUTING #23 Ole Miss
> Ole Miss had its best season in over a decade last year, reaching the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2007. The Rebels earned a 25-9 (11-5 SEC) record and finished ranked No. 22 in the coach's poll.
> The squad began the season with a 91-44 win over A-Sun opponent Queens (NC) before falling to Oklahoma, 80-70. Madison Scott is a player to watch for the Rebels. The forward was named preseason First Team All-SEC after being named Second Team All-Conference last season.
> Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin is in her 6th season in Oxford and 11th as a head coach. She is 174-139 overall and 80-76 at Ole Miss. She has led her team back-to-back 20+ win seasons and consecutive NCAA tournaments.

 SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and Ole Miss have met on the court six times, with the Rebels holding a 5-1 advantage. They first met in 1985, and most recently met in Liacouras Center last season, with Ole Miss coming out on top, 75-55.
> Temple's lone victory coming at the Temple Classic on New Year's Eve, 2001 in Dawn Staley's second season.
> The Owls have not beaten an SEC team since 11/13/15 against Florida (97-91), and have not claimed victory road against the Southeastern Conference since winning at Auburn (62-61) on 12/4/10.
