Temple Women’s Basketball Wins by Historic Margin Over Delaware State to Open Season, 109-43

PHILADELPHIA – Temple (1-0, 0-0) opened its 2023-24 season with a resounding victory over Delaware State (0-1, 0-0), defeating the Hornets 109-43. The Owls built an early lead and never looked back, after setting a program record for largest first-quarter advantage.
Temple had a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, putting up 109 points, the most in a single game since 1/7/1983 when the Owls put 116 against La Salle. Eight Owls scored in double figures, the most in program history. 66 points is the largest margin of victory in program history, breaking the previous record of 50 points also set in the 1983 La Salle game.
Ines Piper led the way with her 2nd career double-double, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
First Quarter: Temple 30, Delaware State 6
> The Owls opened the game on a 9-0 run, with four different Owls contributing to the early offensive rally.
> Temple continued to roll as the quarter progressed. Newcomers Jaleesa Molina and Demi Washington impressed with seven points and four rebounds, respectively.
> The Owls charged to a massive first quarter lead on the back of a 15-0 run. Delaware State had over six minutes of gametime between points scored. Eight different Owls found the bottom of the basket in the first frame alone.
Second Quarter: Temple 52, Delaware State 23
> The Owls continued the breakneck pace in the second frame. Strong team offense propelled the Cherry & White to 40 first half points and a 30 point lead going into the first media timeout (38-8). Temple hit five of its first seven shots.
> Delaware State found its shot as the second quarter wound down, with 17 points in the frame. Temple could not be stopped on the offensive end though, crossing the 50 marker for the first time in half a decade.
> Ines Piper showed off her improved skillset, scoring five points and grabbing four rebounds, both Temple quarter highs.
Third Quarter: Temple 81, Delaware State 34
> The Cherry & White came out of the half on fire, beginning with a 7-3 run. Temple did not look back (59-26).
> The Owls proceeded to score 18 of the next 25 points to extend the lead as wide as 44 points. Seven Owls scored, as the team went 13-21 from the field and 3-7 from three-point range.
> Freshman guard Tristen Taylor scored five points and dished out three assists.
> The Owls capitalized off 18 points in the paint and 18 points off turnovers.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 109, Delaware State 43
> The Owls out-rebounded the Hornets 15-7 and extended the lead to over 60 points. Seven of the team's 15 rebounds in the fourth quarter were offensive rebounds.
> Jaleesa Molina scored seven points off 2-3 shooting and a perfect 3-3 clip at the free-throw line including the team's 100th point with 2:18 remaining.
> Temple saw 12 players record minutes in the fourth quarter.
Game Notes
> The following players made their Temple debuts: Demi Washington, Tristen Taylor, Kendall Currence, Jaleesa Molina, Rayne Tucker, and Channing Williams.
> The 26-point first quarter margin is the most of a Temple team since NCAA women's basketball began using quarters in the 2015-16 season. This was the first time Temple has scored 30 points in the first quarter since 11/5/17 against University of Charleston.
> 52 points marks the first time the Owls have scored 50 in a half since 12/16/17 when the Cherry & White dropped 54 against Marist.
> This is the first time Temple has scored 100 points since Dec. 19, 2015, also against Delaware State.
> Temple's +24 rebound margin is the best since the Owls faced off against Sacred Heart on 12/9/15 (+26). 12 three pointers is also the most Temple has hit since the Owls knocked down 12 from downtown in the same game.
> 109 points is the second most in program history after the La Salle game.
> Jaleesa Molina had one of the best debuts in program history, tying the game high with 16 points at a clip of 6-7 from the field (85.7%) and grabbing six rebounds.
