Women’s Basketball Follows Up Historic Season Opening Win with Georgetown

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (1-0) faces off against the Georgetown Hoyas (1-0) this Thursday night at Liacouras Center at 7 p.m. The Owls are coming off one of their best performances in program history in the season-opener vs Delaware State on Monday, defeating the Hornets, 109-43. The game will broadcast on ESPN+ and the Varsity Network App. Tickets are available to purchase at Owlstix.com.

> The Owls throttled Delaware State by a margin of 66 points, the largest margin of victory in program history.
> Temple absolutely dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a 30-6 lead. The 26-point first quarter margin is the most of a Temple team since NCAA women's basketball began using quarters in the 2015-16 season. This was the first time Temple has scored 30 points in the first quarter of a game since 11/5/17 against the University of Charleston.
> 109 points is the second most points scored in program history, while 43 field goals are the second most fields goal made in program history. Both second only to 1/17/83 against La Salle.
> Eight Owls (Jaleesa Molina, Ines Piper, Tiarra East, Tarriyonna Gary, Aleah Nelson, Rayne Tucker, Demi Washington, and Kendall Currence) scored in double-figures setting a new program best.
> This was the first time Temple has scored 100 points in a game since 2015, also against Delaware State.

> European bigs Molina and Piper impressed against the Hornets. Molina tied the game-high against DSU, scoring 16 points on 6-7 (.857) shooting with six rebounds in her collegiate debut. Piper recorded her first Division I double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
> Freshman point guard Tristen Taylor dazzled with eight assists to go with five points and four steals in her debut. Her eight assists are among the most by a freshman in Temple history.
> Temple returns 70% of its total scoring production from a season ago, second in the AAC behind only reigning conference champion East Carolina (83.4%).
> Wing Tiarra East returns to North Broad for her junior season after an impressive first two years. She picked up right where she left off, scoring 12 points in the opener.
> First Team Big 5 and Second Team All-AAC guard Aleah Nelson headlines for the Owls this season. In 2022-23, Nelson averaged 15.4 points per game and 4.1 assists per game, leading the team in both categories. In her four-year collegiate career, Nelson has scored 1,291 points and passed for 459 assists her career. She will look to be only the third player in Temple women's basketball history to score 1000 points and pass for 500 assists all time.

> Georgetown earned a 14-17 record last season, including 6-14 in the BIG EAST.
> The Hoyas opened the season with a 61-50 win over Maryland Eastern Shore. 22-23 Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST Guard Kelsey Ransom and forward Brianna Scott recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds in the win.
> Head Coach Tasha Butts passed away in October from breast cancer, she was 41 years old. Former Jacksonville Dolphins head coach Darnell Haney has been named interim head coach.
