2.10.23 | Women's Gymnastics

TOWSON, MD. - The Temple gymnastics team took on three of the top four teams in the EAGL conference and three of the top-36 teams in the national rankings on Friday night at the SECU Arena and scored a season-best 195.300, the 14th highest score in school history but couldn't overcome No. 30 Towson's 196.375 score. However, the Owls finished in second place ahead of No. 36 Pitt (195.275) and No. 23 NC State (194.775).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starting off on the floor and ending on the beam, Temple held second place wire-to-wire on Friday night.
  • Along with the 14th-highest all-around team score in school history, the Owls' beam team closed out the meet with five straight 9.8s, helping the team hold second place with the fifth-highest score in school history with a 49.200.
  • Temple's floor team also improved its season-best score of the season with a 48.600.
  • In total the Owls earned nine scores of 9.8 or better.

Rotation 1 (Floor – 48.600)
  • Brooke Donabedian led the Owls on the floor with a 9.875, her second-highest score of the season, and the 21st score of 9.8 or better in her career.
  • Renee Schugman and Summer Ruskey were the only other Owls to add a score higher of 9.7. For Ruskey, it was the third such score for the sophomore this season.

Rotation 2 (Vault – 48.650)
  • Four of the six Owls on the vault added scores of 9.7 or better.
  • Ashley Glynn (9.825) led Temple on the vault with her third 9.8 or better score of the season.

Rotation 3 (Bars – 48.850)
  • Just like on vault, Glynn anchored the bars squad with a team-high 9.825, tying her career-high.
  • Sarah Stallings also scored a 9.8, marking the fifth straight meet to begin the season she would achieve that mark.

Rotation 4 (Beam – 49.200)
  • Going into the final rotation, the Owls led third-place Pitt, 97.250-97.175, but the Owls were able to hold off Pitt in the final rotation with one of their best performances in school history.
  • Five of the final six gymnasts scored a 9.8 or better, including Donabedian tying a career-high with a 9.900. The junior added her second beam victory of the season.
  • Additionally, Madison Dorunda (9.875) and Glynn (9.800) scored career-highs, while Amanda Scheuerman made her debut with a 9.825.
  • Hannah Stallings rounded out the group with a 9.800, her third score of 9.8 or higher this season.

Head Coach Josh Nilson on his team's performance
"The team gutted it out for a 2-1 finish tonight. We came in as the underdog and beat the top ranked team in the conference and the fourth ranked team in the conference. It wasn't a perfect meet, but it was a complete meet," said Nilson. "Beam was lights out tonight with a 49.2 to take the edge over Pittsburgh. We still have room to improve on all four, but the team is starting to settle in and find their groove. Tonight was a big step forward."
