2.8.23 | Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA- Temple women's tennis (2-1) looks to stay the course after beating Howard last weekend and now turn their attention to St. Francis College of Brooklyn (0-5) who come to town at 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club. The Owls then return to Philadelphia on Sunday evening to host Wagner (0-0), which is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Penn.

The OWLS:
  • Temple got out to an early lead against Howard on Sunday behind the No. 6 ranked doubles pairing in the nation of Maiko Uchijima and Jamie Wei, who led the way from the first position.
  • The doubles pairing of Evie Wei and Veronika Kulhava has also been recognized as the No. 55 doubles pairing in the nation, proving to be a solid option for the Owls this season with a 2-1 record out of the second position. In both of the team's wins so far this season, this pairing won their point.
  • After the match against Wagner on Sunday, the team has the following week off to rest and practice until hosting FDU on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Scouting St. Francis:
  • The Terriers of Brooklyn sit at 0-5 with a match scheduled against St. John's in Queens, NY on Wednesday afternoon before heading to Philadelphia to face the Owls on Friday.
  • In their most recent match against St. Francis PA, the Terriers were led by graduate student Milana Lysova who won both from the first position in doubles play with partner Margherita Fiorio, and from the first position of singles play defeating Dominique Yeo of St. Francis.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn entered the NEC Tournament as the fifth seed at the end of last season after finishing 3-12 in the regular season. They were defeated by fourth seed Bryant in the first round.
  • These teams have faced off a total of two times prior to this weekend – most recently on Feb. 5, 2022 when Temple won, 7-0.

Scouting Wagner:
  • The Seahawks will open their spring season on Saturday morning, Feb. 11, with a visit to NJIT in Newark, NJ., before heading south to face the Owls on Sunday.
  • Wagner finished last season with a 4-12 record falling to top-seed and defending NEC champions, LIU in the Quarterfinals.
  • Most recently, Wagner faced the Rider Broncs on Oct. 28, 2022. Even though Wagner won the doubles point, they lost the match 4-3. Tara Dakic and Samantha Bentsianov were the only two student-athletes for the Seahawks winning both their doubles and singles matches.
  • The doubles pairing of Tara Daric and Gabrielle Perraudin represented Wagner into the round of 16 in the ITA Division 1 Women's Regional Championship this past fall.
