Volleyball's Davenport and Lugo to Attend USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Program

The Open Program will run from Feb. 24-26

PHILADELPHIA - Temple volleyball player Taylor Davenport and assistant coach Jose Lugo will travel to the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. for the USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Program, formerly known as the Open Tryout. The Open Program runs from Feb. 24-26.

The Open Program is part of the selection process for the U.S. Women's National Team, USA Volleyball's NCAA Elite Athlete List, and the 2022 U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team. Davenport will join other current and recently graduated college-age athletes born in the years 1998-2004 in the three-day tryout period.

"I am so excited and thankful for this opportunity. It gives me a chance to represent the Temple Volleyball program and the University on a national level. I am very thankful to the coaches for selecting me and trusting me with this opportunity," expressed Davenport. "I am thankful to God as he continues to order my steps. I am excited to meet people, learn so much and possibly represent our country. Another thank you to this program for all of the support!"

Davenport sparked the Temple offense in 2022 as she ended the American Athletic Conference season fifth overall in kills per/set (3.61), kills (451), points (515), and points/set (4.12). It was the first time an Owl player since the 2015 season reached at least 400 kills in a season and marks the fourth-highest output in the 25-point scoring format. Additionally, Davenport recorded double-digit kills in 20 of the team's 31 matches and had nine matches where she earned at least 20 kills, including a career-high 27 versus St. Francis Brooklyn on Sept. 3. Not only was Davenport impressive on the attack, but she also blossomed as a server. The Columbia. S.C. native tallied 26 services which put her second on the team. To end the season, Davenport had at least one service ace in 11 of the final 13 matches, including two times with a career-high six. In conference play, Davenport ranked ninth with .30 aces/set.

Lugo will also travel to Colorado Springs to be a part of the three-day event, but this is not the first time the Temple assistant has been involved in the evaluation process. In 2015-16 and 2019, Lugo worked alongside various collegiate coaches during the national team camp as a part of the WNT/CNT Tryout staff.

Lugo's USA volleyball resume also includes a 2016 Youth National Training Team Coach, a High Performance A1 Assistant Coach in 2014-15, and 2019, a High Performance A2 Head Coach 2016 and 2019, and a High Performance Championships Assistant Coach in 2013-14.

"I've had the privilege of working with USA Volleyball and the Open/College National Team Tryout on more than one occasion and I've met some outstanding coaches and players during these programs. It's an honor once again to be asked to work with these athletes from all over the country and gaining some perspective in the process," said Lugo. "It's always fun to run into athletes in the gym when they are on the other side of the net and they ask, "remember me from that USA camp, or the college national team tryouts?" It's a humbling experience for sure, and very fulfilling."
