Gymnastics' Donabedian, Whalen, and Hill Named 2023 Academic All-Area

PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's gymnasts Brooke Donabedian, Cyrena Whalen, and Anna Hill were honored for their academic and athletic performance as they were named three of the 14 student-athletes on the 2023 PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Women's At-Large Team. The team is nominated and voted on by the sports information offices of 30 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
 
In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.
 
In 2023, Donabedian made her second straight appearance on the national stage. The junior tied for 18th on the floor with a 9.825 at the 2023 NCAA Gymnastics Pitt Regional. The Maple Valley, Wash. native earned a bid to this season's regional after earning the third-best NQS in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL), the sixth-best mark in the northeast region, and a No. 42 national ranking at 9.915.  Donabedian earned six scores in the 9.9 range and tallied five floor event wins, including the March 5 Senior Day when she tied her own school record with a 9.950, a record she tied at home last season on Senior Day. Donabedian currently majors in Sport and Recreation Management and is a two-time WCGA Scholastic All-American and two-time EAGL Scholastic member.
 
Junior Cyrena Whalen competed in all 13 meets for the Owls' gymnastics team in 2023. The Buford, Ga. native ranked 15th bars in the northeast region and 17th in the EAGL. This season, Whalen scored 9.8 or better six times on bars, including earning a career-high 9.925 on March 5 on Senior Day. The junior shined in 2021 with a First Team All-EAGL selection on bars. Academically, Whalen is an advertising major and two-time WCGA Scholastic All-American and a two-time All-EAGL Scholastic Team member.  
 
Additionally, Anna Hill joins her fellow teammates on this year's team after an impressive sophomore season. The Abington, Md. native earned 2023 EAGL All-Tournament First Team on the vault. This past season, Hill earned five 9.8s or higher on vault, including a career-high 9.9 on March 2. Just three days later the sophomore Hill earned three 9.8s or higher on the floor exercise, including a career-high 9.9 on March 5's Senior Day. Academically, Hill majors in health professions and is a multiple time Dean's List and All-EAGL Scholastic Team member.
