Tiburcio Earns Barry Goldwater Scholarship

PHILADELPHIA - Temple fencer Diana Tiburcio has been awarded the Barry Goldwater Scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year, as announced by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
The Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to sophomores and juniors in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics and is considered the most competitive undergraduate scholarship for STEM students who intend a career in research. Tiburcio is junior with a 4.0 GPA in Mechanical Engineering and is one of two Temple students chosen (Nala Hamilton, junior Biology major).
An estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors applied for the scholarships, with 413 students being tabbed. The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.Â
Tiburcio, a saberist, went 27-21 in dual play, placing eighth at the NIWFA Championships and earning NIWFA Second Team honors. The Malvern, Pa. native was also named to the NIWFA All-Academic Team.
