Volleyball Welcomes Princeton to McGonigle Hall on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple volleyball team (6-2) returns to McGonigle Hall for a Wednesday for a non-conference match with the Princeton Tigers (2-4). The first serve is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be available on the ESPN+ app.

LAST TIME OUT
On Friday, in front of the second-largest crowd (2,468) in school history to watch a Temple volleyball match, the Owls fell to No. 12 Penn State, 9-25, 15-25, 25-27, in the The Liacouras Center. The Owls battled Penn State to the very end as they were able to extend Penn State in the third set and take the lead on two different occasions. PSU's Zoe Weatherington and Camryn Hannah led the match with 11 kills apiece, while Weatherington hit. 500, helping the Lions out hit the Owls in the sweep, .314 to .051.

Going into this week, senior Taylor Davenport is ranked second in the AAC and fourth in the NCAA with 4.92 kills per set. Also, the TU standout is currently second in the conference with 5.60 points per set and sixth in the nation.

TRANSFER EXPERIENCE
Graduate transfers Olivia Vance and Avery Luoma saw success against the No. 12 Nittany Lions with each hitter tying for the team-high of six kills in the match. Notably for Vance, the Saline Mich. native had four of her six kills in the third set, helping the Owls take their first lead of the match.

SETTING SITUATION
Setter Patrycja Zielinska goes into Wednesday's match seventh in the AAC with 7.47 assists per set.

In the first weekend of play, weekend Zielinska earned Hilton Philadelphia Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge All-Tournament Team honors as she tallied 74 assists, while averaging 9.24 assists per set and three service aces.

In the offseason, Temple added two highly touted setters, Lexi Yoza and Ava Blascziek. Both rookie setters have played in seven and five matches, respectively off the bench. Yoza has added 58 assists and Blascziek with 51 to date. Notably, in Temple's five-set win versus Dartmouth on Friday, Yoza came Blascziek came off the bench with her first double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs. On Aug. 27 in a sweep of Lehigh, Blascziek came off the bench in the second set to finish off the 3-0 victory and dished out 18 assists. In Friday's loss to Penn State, the pair of freshmen off the bench to run the two-setter offense. Blascziek led the trio of setters with nine assists, three digs and two service aces, while Yoza dished out eight assists. Â
SCOUTING PRINCETON
The Tigers went 0-3 at the Maryland last weekend, losing Coastal Carolina (1-3), UMBC (1-3), and Maryland (0-3). Kamryn Chaney led Princeton overall in the three matches played with 36 kills. The Tigers outside hitter had double-digit kills against Coastal Carolina (15) and UMBC (13), and then finished with eight, one behind Lucia Scalamandre who finished with nine.
TEMPLE VS. PRINCETON
Princeton holds an 8-5 all-time record over Temple with the last match taking place during the 2021. In that match, then-Tigers' player Avery Luoma had 16 kills, helping her team to a 3-1 victory. Taylor Davenport led the Owls on the defensive end with seven blocks, while Miray Bolukbasi and Gem Grimshaw had 24 and 16 kills respectively with Patrycja Zielinska tallying a team-high 44 assists.

Temple will be on the road this weekend for a pair of matches at the Villanova Classic as they take on a pair of Northeast East Conference foes in Saint Francis (Pa.) and Sacred Heart.
