Fencing Defeats UC San Diego To End Day 1 of the Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Friday's snow couldn't stop the No. 11 Temple fencing team from competing at home on day one of the Philadelphia Invitational inside the Temple Pavilion. The Owls ended the day coming up with a 14-13, victory against UC San Diego, but fell earlier in the day to 16-11 to No. 1 Princeton.

MEET SUMMARY
  • The Owls kept round one close against the Princeton, falling in sabre, 5-4, but winning in foil by the same score. The Tigers pulled away for the 16-11 win in the epee, winning 7-2.
  • Temple ended the day with the 14-13 victory over San Diego. The Owls won in sabre, 5-4, and epee, 6-3, but stumbled in the foil, 5-4.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • In two epee rounds, senior Margherita Calderaro led her squad with three wins on the day, including two in the win the 14-13 win versus UC San Diego.
  • Foilist Anna Novelseltseva earned three wins during the two rounds. Renee Oyman followed with a pair of wins, one each in against Princeton and San Diego.
  • Saberist Arwen Gormley led her team with a 3-0 record, all coming against the Triton, while Eva Venta earned two of the four wins against the Tigers.
