1.26.24 | Women's Basketball

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Temple women's basketball team (10-9, 4-3 AAC) heads to New Orleans to face the Tulane Green Wave (8-10, 1-6 AAC) Sunday at 3 p.m. EST. Both sides are coming off close losses in the Dallas area, with Temple falling at SMU at the buzzer, and Tulane losing at North Texas in overtime. The game will stream on ESPN+ and The Varsity Network App.

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 66 @ SMU 68
> Temple came out on the wrong end of a wild game at SMU on Wednesday night.
> After a tight first quarter, the Mustangs held a 10-point lead going into halftime.
> Thanks largely to hot outside shooting from Tarriyonna Gary, Temple stormed back in the third quarter to tie the match at 49 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
> The Owls stormed out of the gate in the final frame to take a 61-54 lead with five minutes left on the clock. Temple led by as many as six points with two minutes remaining. SMU scored the last eight points to win the game. It appeared Tiarra East scored the game winning basket as time expired, but it was ruled the shot was not released in time after review.
> Demi Washington led the Owls with 17 points to go with seven rebounds.

THE OWLS
> Temple currently ranks 8th in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game (16.8) and 16th in turnover margin (+5.9). The Owls also rank second in the AAC in assist/turnover ratio (+1.00) and are first in the conference in turnovers per game (14.4).
> East (11.8 ppg) and Aleah Nelson (12.1 pgg) are scoring over 10 points per game. Nelson ranks 15th in the conference in points per game. Seven players are averaging over seven points per game.
> Nelson has continued to stake her claim as one of the best passers in the AAC, ranking first in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (+2.02) and third in assists per game (4.4). Only seven players in the nation have more points and more assists in their carer than Nelson.
> On the boards, Rayne Tucker ranks 8th the AAC in rebounds per game with 7.6. Tucker and Ines Piper are both top 11 in the conference in blocks.

SCOUTING TULANE
> Last season, Tulane earned its third straight WNIT appearance following an 18-14 season (7-9 AAC).
> The Green Wave are 8-10 with a 1-6 record in American Athletic Conference play. The team has dropped the last three games to some of the top teams in the league, with its most recent defeat coming in overtime at conference leader North Texas.
> Marta Galic is a name to watch for Tulane. The guard is scoring 15.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Kyren Whittington is the team's leader in points per game (16.0), she has missed the last five games.
> Lisa Stockton leads Tulane in her 30th season in New Orleans. During her time with the program, she led The Green Wave to 20 postseasons and has been Coach of the Year in three different conferences. She is 650-361 in her career.

 SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and Tulane have played each other every season since Temple joined the AAC in 2013. The Owls are 7-8 all time against The Green Wave.
> The key feature of the series has been streaks. Temple won six of the first seven matchups between the two, but the Owls dropped the seven straight from 2018-22.
> Last season, in its first game with eight active players, Temple pulled off a unexpected win over Tulane on the road, 68-59. Several players had strong performances, but East shined bright with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

UP NEXT
> Temple will return to North Broad to host Wichita State on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The Owls hammered the Shockers 72-49 on the road earlier this season. The game will stream on ESPN+ and The Varsity Network App. Tickets are available at Owlstix.com.
