Owls Fall Short at East Carolina

10.26.24 | Football, General

GREENVILLE, NC - The Temple Owls (2-6, 1-3) fell to the East Carolina Pirates (4-4, 2-2), 56-34 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday. ECU RB Rahjai Harris led the Pirates offensively, tallying 130 yards on the ground and adding a rushing touchdown.

For Temple, WR Ashton Allen caught four passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while DE Tra Thomas and SAF Javier Morton both recorded interceptions.

How it Happened
  • East Carolina started the scoring with a touchdown on their first drive of the game, capped off by a 42-yard pass from QB Katin Houser to WR Anthony Smith. This made the score 7-0 Pirates with 13:33 left in the first quarter.
  • Temple evened the score 7-7 on the next possession, with QB Evan Simon keeping it himself for the 1-yard rushing rushing touchdown with 8:04 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Pirates reclaimed the lead when Houser found WR Jhari Patterson for a 17-yard touchdown with 4:18 left in the first quarter. The PAT was no good, resulting in a 13-7 ECU advantage.
  • Minutes later, the Owls took their first lead of the game in the form of a 60-yard touchdown pass from Simon to Allen. The fourth consecutive combined touchdown drive of the game made the score 14-13 Temple with 2:40 to go in the first quarter.
  • Allen's second touchdown of the day, a 28-yard reception from Simon, extended Temple's lead to 21-13 with 9:39 remaining in the first half. The score was set up by an interception at the line of scrimmage from Thomas, who caught the wobbling ball after DE Diwun Black forced it out of Houser's hand.
  • A nine-yard receiving touchdown from ECU WR Winston Wright Jr. on 4th-and-2 cut into Temple's lead, making the score 21-20 Owls with 6:23 left in the second quarter.
  • East Carolina WR Chase Sowell was the fourth Pirate to catch a touchdown, as he hauled in a 45-yard pass from Houser with eight seconds left in the first half, making the score 27-21 ECU at the half.
  • The Pirates opened the second half strong, going down the field quickly and Harris punched in a touchdown run from four yards out that gave ECU a 35-21 advantage with 13:30 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Temple answered in the form of a 79-yard drive that finished with a 25-yard touchdown reception from TE Landon Morris. This cut ECU's lead to seven, 35-28, with 6:25 left in the third quarter.
  • East Carolina RB Marlon Gunn Jr. became the sixth Pirate to score a touchdown after taking the ball 7-yards for a rushing touchdown with 5:01 remaining in the third quarter. This made the score 42-28 ECU.
  • A mishandled pass fell into the arms of Pirates' DB Ja'Marley Riddle, who returned the interception 55 yards for a touchdown. This gave ECU a 49-28 lead with 4:48 left in the third quarter.
  • After East Carolina was given a short field following an interception, ECU WR Yannick Smith caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Houser. Houser's fifth touchdown of the day gave the Pirates a 56-28 lead with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter.
  • A 7-yard rushing touchdown from Owls' RB Terrez Worthy made the score 56-34 ECU with 14:10 left in the game. This score held the rest of the way, resulting in an East Carolina win.

Statistically Speaking
  • Ashton Allen set a career-high 109 receiving yards and four receptions, including a career long 60-yard touchdown reception. His two touchdowns also marked a career high.

Notes
  • James Della Pesca, Elijah Deravil, Evan Simon, and D.J. Woodbury, Sr. served as game captains.
  • While making his first career start, freshman WR Jamar Taylor Jr. recorded his first career reception in the first quarter.
  • Temple got into the endzone in all four quarters of today's game. This marked the first time this has happened since Nov. 12, 2022 at Houston. The Owls came up just short in that contest, 36-43.

Up Next
Temple will have its second bye of the season before traveling to Tulane for a game against the Green Wave. Kickoff time and broadcast network are still to be determined.
