Field Hockey Douses Third Consecutive Ranked Opponent, Beating No. 18 Liberty 5-1

10.4.24 | Field Hockey

LYNCHBURG, Va.Tess Muller and Peyton Rieger each scored a pair of goals as the Temple field hockey team defeated its third consecutive ranked opponent, downing the No. 18 Liberty Flames 5-1 in a BIG EAST contest on Friday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • It was the first win for Temple against Liberty since the initial meeting between the schools in 2011.
  • For both Muller and Rieger, the goals were their fourth and fifth of the season.
  • Alize Maes also scored, finishing off a well-executed penalty corner.
  • Muller, Rieger and Marsha Ariesen each contributed an assist.
  • Isabella Ospitale was a wall in cage for Temple, making a career-high eight saves while lowering her goals against average to 1.07.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Temple started hot out of the gates as Muller made an individual effort in the right side of the circle before lofting the ball past the Liberty keeper for a 1-0 TU lead.
  • Ospitale made sure the lead stood through the end of the frame, making an initial save on a corner and then stopping a subsequent penalty stroke with just more than four minutes to go.
  • Early in the second quarter, the Flames tied the game coming off a penalty corner. The rest of the half was played evenly as the teams went into the break, knotted at 1-1.
  • Four minutes into the second half, TU executed a perfect corner as Muller inserted, the ball was trapped by Ariesen and Maes smacked the ball home from the top of the circle.
  • Temple extended the lead in just seconds into the fourth as Rieger found the back of the cage on a rebound in front. Four minutes later, on another corner, Rieger deflected the ball to Muller, who delivered her second goal of the game to push the advantage to 4-1.
  • Closing the scoring, Rieger poked home a pass across the circle from Matthea Lassalle in the final minute.
