Five Owls’ Fencers Earn Spots In Elimination Round of Saturday’s NAC

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Owls fencing had another strong showing on day two of the North American Cup at the Atlantic City Convention Center. Temple moved all five of its fencers on the day through to the elimination round of their respective events.

" It was a good day of tough competition for our Temple Fencers. Our Epeeist and sabrists all qualified through the pool rounds to the direct elimination tableus. First years Sammy Nathanson (Sabre) and Victoria Doroshkevich (Epee) both won key matches to finish with National point ranking results. We are looking forward to the next few days of competition where we can build on this success. "

- Three epeeists earned spots in the elimination rounds of the Junior Epee division with sophomore Grace Smith leading Owls with a tremendous pool round where she went 5-1, posting pool-best plus-11. Freshman Victoria Doroshkevich had a strong pool going 4-2. Sophomore Lindsey Minor also earned spot in the elimination round where she had the third-best touch score (+2) of her pool.
- In the round of 256, Smith won over Madyson Gavilanes of Mission Fencing, 15-10, but fell to Sierra Springer Leo Fencing in a close contest,15-14.
- Doroshkevich defeated Brianna Mun LAIFC in the round of 256 by the score of 15-9 and then knocked off Emma Mueller of Rhode Island Fencing Academy, 14-9, before falling to Isabella Chin of NY Fencing Academy, 15-7, in the round of 64.
- In the Junior Sabre Pool round, freshman Samantha Nathanson and Alexandra Papapetropolou finished with 4-2 records, with both moving into the elimination round. In pool play, Nathanson was plus-eigh, connecting 26 times against 18 received. Papapetropolou ended her round with a plus-three, with 22 touches and 19 received.
- Nathanson earned her way to the round of 64 after defeating Marisa Nadkarni of Capital Fencing and Reese Birnstill of Mission Fencing Club by the scores 15-12 and 15-6, respectively. The Needham, Mass. native fell to Hannah Lee of Boston Fencing, 15-10.
- Papapetropoulou earned a win in the round of 256, defeating Isabella Barroso of Nova Fencing, 15-9, but fell to Ashley Chen of Notre Dame, 15-7, in the round of 128.
